As the NFL is going on, things are getting pretty intense for the teams. After the Las Vegas Raiders, many teams are on the verge of firing their head coaches. Now, the latest coach whom fans want the team to fire is Sean McDermott. The Buffalo Bills coach has been facing backlash after the team lost their recent game.
Recently, the Bills locked horns with the Denver Broncos at Bills Stadium. Josh Allen’s team ended up losing the game by 22-24. During the game, Allen completed 15 out of his 26 passing attempts. He also recorded only 1 TD and 2 interceptions for 177 yards. However, after the loss, fans are angry with the team’s HC Sean McDermott.

Despite having a slim chance of winning, the Broncos dominated the Bills and snatched victory out of their mouth. Russell Wilson’s team successfully recorded a walk-off field goal as Sean McDermott didn’t have the team proactive. Now, the 49-year-old HC is facing backlash for not lining up his defensive special team correctly.
After the loss, the Buffalo Bills have slipped to a 5-5 record this NFL season. It’s even more shameful as the Broncos were having an even worse time this season with only 3 wins in 8 games. However, after the game, they have improved to a 4-5 record. As for the Bills, this is the 1st time the team has been 0.500 or less since 2018.
Born in March 1974, the Bills HC is now in hot water with the team’s bad performance this year. Moreover, McDermott himself has accepted that the team’s performance has been disappointing. Now, only time will tell if the Bills can make it to the Super Bowl or not.
A look at the coaching record of Sean McDermott
Sean McDermott is undoubtedly in great trouble at present. However, firing the coach might not be a wise move considering his records. The Nebraska-born coach joined the Bills in 2017 and has been exceptional even since then. His presence as the head coach has helped the team a lot. In fact, McDermott has been the most successful coach for the Bills to date.
Before McDermott took the charge, the Bills were playing under former HC Rex Ryan. He was one of the most unsuccessful coaches for the team with a 15-16 record. Ryan stayed with the team for only a year from 2015 to 2016 and had a winning percentage of .480. The most unsuccessful HC for the team was Dick Jauron (2006-2009). He had a terrible 24-33 record with a winning percentage of .423.
Former HC Lou Saban, who coached the team twice (from 1962-65 and 1972-76) had a decent record of 68-45. However, his career-winning percentage wasn’t good enough at .490. Chuck Knox, who served as the Bills HC from 1978 to 1982 was yet another unsuccessful coach. He had an unimpressive 37-36 record but his career winning percentage was good at .558.
Wade Phillips and Marv Levy are yet another coaches whom Sean McDermott has overshadowed. Phillips had a 29-19 record with a winning percentage of .562. As for Levy, he had a 112-70 record with the Bills with a winning percentage of .561.
All these coaches had their ups and downs but they are nowhere close to Sean McDermott. The present HC has an exceptional 71-45 record with a .612 winning percentage. However, the 49-year-old’s postseason record is an unimpressive 4-5. Another area where McDermott lacks is the challenge record with a mere 7-22. With this record, his success percentage stands at a terrible 31.8, which is among the lowest ones.
It’s obvious that Sean McDermott has had his ups and downs with the Buffalo Bills. It’s true that the current HC lags in a few places. However, the team shouldn’t ignore his phenomenal coaching record with the team. Now, it’ll be worth watching whether the team chooses to keep him or fire him.
