Jurgen Klopp announced his farewell from Liverpool in January 2024
In a shocking turn of events, the 56-year-old announced his departure from the Merseyside club on January 26, 2024. The timing of the decision shocked many Liverpool fans as the team was doing quite well both domestically and in Europe. ‘The Reds’ were in a title race with Arsenal and Manchester City and had a shot at a host of other trophies. Besides, Jurgen Klopp still had over two years left on his Liverpool contract.
However, Jurgen Klopp declared in an with the club that he had lost the energy to coach the club. The former Borussia Dortmund manager admitted that he still adores the club a lot. He said, “I love everything about this club, I love everything about the city, I love everything about our supporters, I love the staff.” Yet, the German manager did not feel prepared enough to lead the club anymore. “It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy”, announced Klopp.
However, the manager confirmed that he would not manage any other club in England ever, and will take some time off-management. He also thanked the owners, namely the John Henry-pwned FSG for supporting his decision.
Liverpool has already started preparing for the post-Klopp era
The Merseyside club are the masters at soccer operations. The club is deeply sad about their German manager’s departure. Jurgen Klopp had brought back the glory days to Anfield once again, winning a UEFA Champions League and their first Premier League title in 30 years. However, Liverpool also understands that to remain competitive in the English top flight, it needs to move on from Klopp once and for all. And, the club’s post-Jurgen Klopp might involve a Sporting Director they have long-yearned for.
It looks like FSG is finalizing the details of reappointing Michael Edwards as their new CEO of soccer. The Englishman had earlier worked as the Sporting Director for ‘The Reds’ from 2016-2022. Edwards had done an excellent work at the club forming a team of match-winners. The Southampton-born is credited for bringing the likes of Mohammad Salah, Virgil Van Dijk, Sadio Mane, and Ibrahima Konate amongst many others for a reasonable price to Merseyside.

Liverpool tried hard to convince Michael Edwards to rejoin, with their first approach in January 2024 being rejected. Edwards will likely have a more senior role this time around, with FSG’s ambitions of running another overseas club apart from Liverpool. Even the Englishman has accepted that FSG’s desire to acquire another club changed his mind. Michael Edwards reportedly, rejected approaches from Real Madrid and PSG to return to Liverpool.
This time, however, the 44-year-old will be aided by Bournemouth’s Richard Hughes. Michael Edward looked pretty determined to work with the club again.
