Video game designer Mike Pondsmith’s series of games served as the inspiration for CD Projekt Red’s 2020 action role-playing game, Cyberpunk 2077, which was released by CD Projekt. The player takes on the character of “V,” a mercenary in the made-up Californian city of “Night City,” in this dystopian cyberpunk setting.
Critics commended Cyberpunk 2077 for its story, setting, and visuals. Nonetheless, opinions on some of its gaming features were divided, and some people took issue with its themes and how transgender characters were portrayed. It also received a lot of flak for having flaws, especially in the console versions that had issues with performance.
On September 26, 2023, the expansion Phantom Liberty was made available for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Within a week of its release, 3 million copies of the game were sold.
Cyberpunk live-action project
The Witcher is a Netflix series that CD Projekt Red brought to life with remarkable success. Additionally, Cyberpunk 2077 has an animated offshoot called Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Now, Anonymous Content Studios and game developer CD Projekt Red are working on a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 project that will feature a full cast and transport Night City and the cybernetics-filled dystopia to screens.
Since Keanu Reeves or Idris Elba may feature in the live-action version, which would represent a new medium for Night City and the corrupt corporate entities in charge of it, excitement has been building since the Cyberpunk 2077 movie/show was announced in October 2023.
It is anticipated that the production cycle for Cyberpunk 2077 will be prolonged due to the abundance of practical and computer-generated effects needed to bring the dismal sci-fi universe to life. Even the project’s nature is still unknown; it’s not certain if Cyberpunk 2077 will be faithfully adapted for the screen or if it will only be a fiction set in its universe.

The live-action Cyberpunk 2077 project, however, will not be launched until 2025 at the latest, according to confirmation from CD Projekt Red.
Speaking at the developer’s most recent earnings call, chief commercial officer Michał Nowakowski said the project won’t launch in 2024 when questioned about how CD Projekt Red intends to sustain Cyberpunk 2077 sales in the future. However, he didn’t specify when the project would launch.
