- after retiring in 2021, Rooney has started the second chapter of his soccer career as a manager.
Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has been recently sacked from his role as Birmingham City’s head coach. Since hanging up his boots in 2021, Rooney has started the second chapter of his soccer career as a manager. He has experience in managing Derby County and DC United. However, after a run of poor results, Rooney was earlier sacked by Birmingham City.
Wayne Rooney was appointed as the head coach of the EFL Championship club Birmingham City in October last year. Rooney was earlier in charge of the MLS side DC United but left last year after failing to lead his side to the playoffs. However, despite the ex-Manchester United forward’s return to English soccer, he didn’t last long in his new job.

Earlier today, Rooney was sent packing after just 15 games in charge of Birmingham City as a manager. His last game came in City’s 0-3 defeat against Leeds United. Out of the 15 games he managed, he lost nine of them and could muster only two wins. Moreover, no other Championship team has won fewer points than Birmingham City since Rooney’s appointment last year.

Following the decision of the club to terminate his contract, Wayne Rooney issued a statement on his Instagram and thanked Birmingham City’s top brass for their continued support and bid goodbye to the club. After Rooney’s exit, Steve Spooner has stepped in as the interim coach. However, the reports suggest that the former Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper is the favorite to replace Rooney at Birmingham City.
Soccer fans react to Wayne Rooney’s sacking
Meanwhile, several soccer fans have given their opinion on Wayne Rooney being sacked from Birmingham City. While most fans expressed their support for the former Everton star, others believed that Rooney was not cut out to be a soccer manager. The fans stated, rightly so, that not all great soccer players turn out to be great soccer coaches.
This has happened in the situation of Diego Maradona, Roy Keane, and Alan Shearer. Some sided with Rooney and stated that Birmingham City should have given more time to the 38-year-old coach than just 13 weeks. On the other hand, another fan claimed that it was only Rooney’s legendary status as a player that kept him as a manager for as long as 13 weeks.
