English Football League (EFL) club Birmingham City FC has parted ways with their manager Wayne Rooney. The 38-year-old has been sacked from his position. It was following Birmingham City’s recent defeat at the hands of Leeds United at Elland Road.
Wayne Rooney was appointed as the manager of Birmingham City in October 2023. Since his appointment, the Englishman has failed to deliver the sort of results that the club expected from him. His team underwent an extremely poor run of form. With relegation from the Championship looming large on the club, Wayne Rooney has been finally shown the exit gate.

However, Rooney has posted a parting message for the club’s management. It includes the name of Birmingham City’s Chairman of the Advisory Board – Tom Brady. The 38-year-old wrote on one of his socials – “I would like to thank Tom Wagner, Tom Brady, and Garry Cook for the opportunity to manage Birmingham City FC and the support they all gave me during my short period with the club”.
He further mentioned soccer being a “results business”. Rooney also insisted that his 13 weeks in charge of Birmingham City was not “sufficient” time to “oversee the changes” that were required by the club. The former player also stated about the fact that it would take him “some time” to get over this sacking.
In his final parting words he asserted – “Finally, I wish Birmingham City FC and its owners my best wishes in the pursuit of their ambition”. It can be inferred from the statements of the English manager, that he really wanted to make a difference at the club. However, things didn’t quite pan out as he would have liked.
Birmingham City’s professional development coach Steve Spooner will take charge of the club
As per the reports, Birmingham City FC’s professional development coach Steve Spooner will take charge as the coach of the club for the time being. Steve will serve as the interim coach until the club’s hierarchy sorts out their options as they look for a new manager.
Steve Spooner has been associated with the English-based club for about three years now. He has also once before donned the role of the club’s caretaker manager. It was during the 2019-2020 EFL Championship season. Steve has earlier managed Birmingham City’s Under-18 and Under-21 sides.
The 62-year-old knows the current players at the club well. He also comes across as a very level-headed human being. His interviews in the past have often depicted his great knowledge of the game. Birmingham City FC’s management will be hoping that he will be able to do a fair job for them until they find a replacement for Wayne Rooney.
