It is being reported that Chelsea might have to lose out on the talented defender as soon as the 2024 summer transfer window. Borussia Dortmund appears to be the favorite to land the Dutchman’s signature, as his father reveals the unfair treatment Maatsen received at Chelsea.
Ian Maatsen’s entourage approves of Dortmund’s willingness to keep him
The 22-year-old’s father Edward Maatsen has revealed, that they are actively working with Borussia Dortmund to land an agreement. The main reason behind this is the unpleasant time that Ian Maatsen had to endure at his parent club, Chelsea. The player and his entourage do not want to repeat the same and would do anything in their hands to avoid going back to the West London club.
Ian Maatsen’s father has revealed their summer 2024 transfer window plan. Edward said, “Yes, we are working on staying here. Things are not going well at Chelsea since the change of ownership.” According to him, Borussia Dortmund is more suitable for nurturing young talents, given their past record of producing wonderful talents like Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland.

However, Ian’s father did not forget to throw shade at Chelsea’s troublesome club management under Todd Boehly. He said (via Goal), “Ian is developing well here (Dortmund) and things are not going well at Chelsea since they changed ownership. A lot at that club also revolves around money, which sometimes seems more important than the club’s interests.” Edward believes that the money-minded approach at Chelsea was hampering Ian Maatsen’s growth.
Ian Maatsen has been in stellar form since joining Dortmund
Chelsea must be feeling gutted after seeing Ian Maatsen play with such flare and ease for Borussia Dortmund. The Dutchman received hardly any chances at Chelsea and has done amazingly well to become a starter for Dortmund on such short notice.
Since joining the German side in January, Iaan Maatsen has played over 1000 minutes in the Bundesliga, which is more than 5 times the amount he did in the Premier League. The left-back has fit in perfectly in coach Edin Terzic’s system and has impressed with his attacking flare as well as defensive awareness.

The left-back is a crucial reason behind Borussia Dortmund making it to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time since the 2012/13 season. Ian Maatsen was in phenomenal touch in both legs of the quarter-finals against Atletico Madrid, even scoring a goal in Dortmund’s 3-1 win.
The Dutchman is also pretty loved by the Borussia Dortmund fanbase who have been mesmerized by the 22-year-old’s performances. Hence, all the signs point towards a permanent contract for Maatsen at Borussia Dortmund. However, it would be interesting to see how the German club negotiates a deal with Chelsea.
