A ground-breaking rendering method that has transformed the aesthetic appeal of video games is ray tracing. It simulates the behavior of light rays with an unmatched level of realism, in contrast to conventional rasterization techniques that approximate how light interacts with virtual objects in a simplified manner. It changes the game in the realm of gaming.
Ray tracing fundamentally simulates the routes taken by individual light beams when they interact with virtual worlds, bounce off surfaces, and refract through transparent materials. Its ability to mimic how light behaves in the real world offers players immersive experiences that heighten the beauty and realism of virtual environments.

Ray tracing requires a lot of computational power, but new graphics cards like AMD’s Radeon GPUs and NVIDIA’s RTX series have made it more widely available. This technology is becoming more prevalent in the gaming industry as game creators adopt it more and more, which bodes well for the creation of games that are aesthetically stunning and immersive in the future.
What is Ray Tracing?
Ray tracing is a 3-D computer graphics technique for simulating light transport for use in a wide range of rendering algorithms to produce digital images. It is an old but now extensively used technology that realistically displays light and shadow to produce almost lifelike visuals.
Rasterization was once the only method player’s graphics cards or gaming consoles used to create images to send to our screens. This process converts 3D visuals into the 2D pixels we see on screens, after which shaders add illumination. However, it is a different method that, while currently more hardware-intensive, may produce stunning visual effects by literally tracing every virtual ray of light.
this is path tracing . what people call “ray tracing” in gaming is just tracking a handful of things like just shadows or some* reflections
path tracing calculates EVERYTHING the only other game that does this that i know of is Portal RTX pic.twitter.com/01OBVV5Iau

It is possible to reduce image noise artifacts produced by ray tracing-based rendering approaches that sample light over a domain by tracing a very large number of rays or by utilizing denoising methods. Ray tracing can simulate several optical phenomena, including reflection, refraction, soft shadows, scattering, depth of focus, motion blur, caustics, ambient occlusion, and dispersion phenomena.
Do both AMD and Nvidia have ray tracing?
Both AMD and Nvidia were actively researching and integrating ray tracing technology in their graphics cards. The degree to which they had incorporated this technology into their product lines differed, though.
Ray tracing functionality was one of the innovations that Nvidia pioneered with their GeForce RTX line of graphics cards. Real-time ray tracing in video games was made possible by these cards’ specialist RT core circuitry, which was created to speed up its calculations. The ray tracing software and toolkit from Nvidia also included their own RTX technology, which has features like DLSS to improve performance in ray-traced games.
AMD, on the other hand, had made clear that it would support ray tracing and was working diligently to get it into its graphics cards. They unveiled the RDNA 2 architecture, which featured RDNA 2 ray accelerators as hardware-accelerated ray tracing capability.
It is unlikely that AMD or Nvidia will have a clear winner in this ongoing conflict. There is no one manufacturer of the best-in-class GPUs; both businesses produce them. The competition between the two businesses benefits consumers, which is its best feature.
To outperform Nvidia, AMD constantly pushing the envelope to create more potent GPUs. While Nvidia constantly coming up with new, cutting-edge technologies while also dropping its price for customers to give them the best. The graphic cards from both of these manufacturers become more and more powerful and less expensive every year as a result of their rivalry.
Nvidia is now ahead in the race for market share but by a slim margin. AMD is still in front when it comes to pricing, although not by as much as before. It will be difficult for you to choose a manufacturer in the GPU industry if you’re seeking a specific one. Which graphics card best suits your needs and preferences ultimately depends on you.
