Tom Aspinall has quickly become one of the top prospects in the UFC heavyweight division. The British fighter is a fresh change in the heavyweight division due to his technical skills and speed which is usually lacking in the division. However, the British fighter confused the fans about his nationality because of a viral clip.
During the promotion for his match against Marcin Tybura, Aspinall started to speak Polish. While having a faceoff in London, Tom Aspinall said, “You’re not fat anymore, what happened?” in fluent Polish to his opponent from Poland. This incident led the fans to believe that Tom is Polish. Furthermore, he used to post Polish flags on his Instagram polls, leading to more confusion.
Tom Aspinall is of British nationality and belongs to the British-white ethnicity from his father’s side. Furthermore, he was born and brought up in Greater Manchester, England. His father, Andy Aspinall is a British jiu-jitsu instructor at ‘Team Kaobon’. Furthermore, Andy was the inspiration for Tom to pursue mixed-martial arts.
While there is not much information available about Tom’s mother, he addressed that he is part Polish. Tom Aspinall made a video explaining the inclusion of Polish flags on his Instagram account in which he addressed his Polish origins. “I also feel Polish and I am proud,” said Aspinall. This makes Tom half-British and half-Polish.
Tom Aspinall has a Polish wife
Tom Aspinall’s wife, Justynagro Aspinall, hails from Poland. While Tom and Justynagro like to keep their personal lives out of the punlic eye, she has been a part of his MMA journey from the start. Furthermore, his wife’s ethnicity can also play a huge factor in how Tom Aspinall can speak such fluent Polish.
Tom has three children with Justynagro and two of them are twins. Furthermore, Mrs. Aspinall is not active on social media but Tom often pays tribute to his wife’s culture by posting Polish flags.
Tom Aspinall even touched on his Polish connections during an episode of ‘The MMA Hour’ with Ariel Helwani. During the conversation, Tom was calling for a fight with Marcin Tybura at UFC Poland due to his Polish family roots. Although he got his requested fight against Tybura, it happened in his country, England.
His fluency in Polish reflects the fact that he admires and respects his wife and mother. Hopefully, he will get a chance to fight in Poland one day. It is very impressive how this British fighter is able to respect both his English and Polish origins in an equal fashion.
Currently, he is booked to face Sergei Pavlovich for the interim heavyweight title at UFC 295. A victory over Pavlovich can get him closer to his dream match against Jon Jones.
