What was the issue with Gregg Berhalter?
The former USMNT coach was under investigation after he confessed to kicking his wife Rosalind before they were married. The manager disclosed the issue in a lengthy statement that he posted on Twitter.
In the letter, Berhalter confessed to kicking his wife in a bar fight back in 1991 when they were still dating. The manager condoned his actions as ‘shameful’ and revealed that it has already been dealt with in his inner circle.
Berhalter suggested that he was blackmailed before he revealed this incident to the world. Reyna was said to be involved in blackmailing the former coach as retaliation for the way Gio Reyna was treated at the World Cup.

The coach wrote, “During the World Cup, an individual contacted U.S. Soccer, saying that they had information about me that would ‘take me down’ – an apparent effort to leverage something very personal from long ago to bring about the end of my relationship with U.S. Soccer.”
The organization wrote on the matter, “Through this process, U.S. Soccer has learned about potential inappropriate behavior towards multiple members of our staff by individuals outside of our organization. We take such behavior seriously and have expanded our investigation to include those allegations.”
Gio Reyna’s mother Danielle Reyna, later confessed to mentioning the domestic violence incident to the then-sporting director Earnie Stewart. However, she denied the statements regarding blackmailing the former coach. The U.S. soccer then released a report where the Reyna family was found not guilty of blackmailing.
Berhalter’s investigation by U.S. soccer concluded in March. The organization held that there is no legal impediment to employing him. Therefore the manager remains an option to be appointed as a head coach again.
