The former England midfielder David Beckham was an integral part of the rise of England’s soccer team at the international level. The 48-year-old also went on to represent one of the biggest clubs in soccer history Manchester United during his career. He represented United in a respectable number of 394 matches.
On the contrary, the former Argentina player Diego Simone is currently the manager of the Spanish club Atletico de Madrid. Diego just like David Beckham was also a midfielder. The 53-year-old has been managing the La Liga club since December 2011. After the end of his playing career, the Argentine ventured into a managerial career.
As per the earlier reports, the relationship between both the players was not on a decent note since an incident that involved both of them occurred during a World Cup match in the year 1998. Beckham’s England was facing Diego’s Argentina in a last-sixteen match.
Diego reportedly fouled Becks during a passage of play. However, as per the reports, when Diego Simeone was trying to stand up after falling along with Becks, he went on to grease his fingers’ knuckles into David’s head’s backside.
Becks reportedly was frustrated with Diego’s action and impulsively kicked him onto his leg. The referee showed a red card to the England international for his action. He was consequently sent -off from the match. Further reports state that the Three Lions lost the match that went into the penalty shootout.
However, years after the incident Becks reportedly opened up about it. The 48-year-old reflected on it in his documentary. The veteran quoted – “I just remember the ball being played to me, and then being hit from behind”. He further expressed that I faced “the most difficult time in my career” for a few years after the incident.
David Beckham and Diego Simeone were spotted together during the FIFA World Cup 2022 final
According to earlier reports, Becks was spotted alongside Diego Simeone during the FIFA World Cup 2022. The two legends of the game were seen together at the final match of the tournament between Argentina and France. While Diego donned an Argentina jersey below a blazer, Becks donned formal attire.
Becks reportedly shared a picture with Diego Simeone on one of his socials and captioned it as “Congratulations my friend (Simeone)” after Argentina won the event by beating France. Diego reflecting on his courtsey reposted the post from Becks and stated – “Good to see you always”, as inflicted by the reports.
It can be inferred from their meet-up at the prestigious event, that both the former players have left the so-called beef between them in the 1998 World Cup clash behind them and have started afresh despite their past rivalry. Fans around the world would have been delighted to spot both the veterans together.
