However, one of soccer’s most revered partnerships is set to end in the summer of 2024. Marco Reus has announced that he is leaving Borussia Dortmund after the end of the current season.
Marco Reus to leave Borussia Dortmund after 12 years at the club
The German’s contract was set to expire on June 30, 2024, and his contract extension was put on hold for some time. There was an expectation that Dortmund and Reus would be able to reach an agreement on a short-term deal to keep their collaboration going. However, Marco Reus has defied everybody’s expectations with his decision to leave the club at the end of his contract.
Marco Reus has explained this difficult decision in a statement. He said (via Borussia Dortmund), “I’m incredibly grateful for and proud of this special time at my club Borussia Dortmund. I have spent more than half of my life at this club and enjoyed every day, even though there have of course been difficult moments too.”
He continued, “I already know now that I will find it difficult to say goodbye at the end of the season. And yet I’m happy that there is now clarity and that we can focus fully on the very important final games that we still have to play.”

The German has revealed that it would be very difficult for him to bid farewell to a club whose roots in Marco goes back to his youth soccer days. Borussia Dortmund is likely to give a huge send-off to Marco Reus at their iconic Signal Iduna Park towards the end of the season.
Marco Reus has achieved legendary status at the German club
The German had played for Borussia Dortmund’s youth team from 1995-2005 before venturing out to other German clubs. Marco Reus then returned to Dortmund in 2012 from Borussia Monchengladbach. The player then became a loyal servant for the Bundesliga club, becoming a role model for the younger players at the club. He also captained the side from 2018-2023.
With Borussia Dortmund, Marco Reus has accumulated some unbelievable numbers. The player has played in 424 games for the German side where he has scored 168 goals and assisted a further 128. He is also the player with the second-highest goals for Borussia Dortmund and ranks 4th amongst Dortmund players for most appearances made for the club.

The 34-year-old has also earned his fair share of silverware with the club. Borussia Dortmund and Marco Reus 2 DFL Supercups and 3 DFB Pokals. He has also won the Bundesliga Player of the Season award twice as a Borussia Dortmund player. However, he could not fulfill his dream of winning the German League title with his beloved team.
In our opinion, Marco Reus’ career would have reached even bigger heights, if not for his injuries. His teammates, though have the opportunity to give a perfect send-off to their leader and legend. Borussia Dortmund is ahead 1-0 in their UCL semi-final tie with Paris Saint Germain and are the favorites to qualify for the UEFA Champions League final. Marco Reus can end his illustrious Dortmund career by lifting the UCL title at Wembley.
