Lionel Messi was unveiled by Inter Miami in a star-studded event at DRV PNK Stadium on Sunday, foreshadowing a significant impact on MLS. The MLS governing bodies are expecting a large influx of new viewers to the league with the arrival of the World Cup 2022 winner. But, to facilitate the Argentine superstar, MLS teams will have to spend millions on changing to grass pitches from artificial turf.
MLS Commissioner Don Garber has outlined a unique requirement for certain teams facing Messi: the installation of grass surfaces on their artificial turf fields. Teams such as Seattle Sounders, Portland Timbers, New England Revolution, Atlanta United, and Charlotte FC currently play on artificial surfaces which results in hamstring injuries.
Garber, who spoke to The Athletic, disclosed that MLS has previously introduced natural grass for international games but has never done so for regular season matches.
He emphasized, “Many international stars join Major League Soccer, and they express intrigue or concern about playing on non-grass surfaces. We’ve witnessed some of the greatest players ever, like Thierry Henry and Kaka, playing on turf.”
“Don Garber has taken this league to a whole other level. Something that we never really imagine… Seeing how the best player in the world, right now, Messi, is playing in Major League Soccer.”@susannahcollins and @CharlieDavies9 catch up with MLS Commissioner Don Garber to… pic.twitter.com/LkXSySYlSt

Concerns have long existed regarding the impact of artificial turf on players. The hardness and carpet-like texture hinders optimal performance. It is argued that synthetic surfaces provide less cushioning. It can result in an increased risk of injuries to the feet, ankles, and knees.
MLS and Inter Miami are not willing to risk their valuable asset by having Messi play on pitches that pose a higher risk of injuries. In the coming months, Messi is expected to face Atlanta United and Charlotte FC.
Consequently, significant investments are anticipated in these clubs as they make the necessary changes to their pitches. This strategic decision aims to safeguard Messi’s well-being and preserve the financial interests associated with his presence in the league.
