Marco Reus has settled the GOAT debate once and for all his old comments have been resurfacing on the Internet. Reus, who plays for the German club Borussia Dortmund had a unique take on the age-old Lionel Messi versus Cristiano Ronaldo debate. However, Reus’ answer hasn’t left any place for a doubt on which player he prefers.
According to @BarcaWorldwide, Marco Reus has expressed his preference for Lionel Messi. Upon being asked about whether he prefers Messi or Ronaldo, Reus has his particular take. He said, “Cristiano Ronaldo is extraordinary, but he’s on a list of another 20 players who have been compared to Leo Messi.” He further made his preference for Messi clear during a rapid-fire interview with ESPN a few years ago.
This take on Messi vs Ronaldo is one of the most accurate I’ve ever heard 🫡👏 pic.twitter.com/bKoxVve3sZ

Throughout his career, Marco Reus has faced Lionel Messi on three occasions. The pair first met each other during an international friendly. Messi was on the scoresheet as Argentina defeated Germany 3-1. They again faced each other in the 2019-20 season of the UEFA Champions League. While Reus’ Dortmund drew the first leg, in the return leg, Messi inspired FC Barcelona to a 3-1 victory.
On the other hand, Marco Reus has been a bit more fortunate when facing Cristiano Ronaldo. Reus has faced Ronaldo on seven different occasions and has won three of those seven meetings. Interestingly, all three of Reus’ wins have come in the UEFA Champions League and when Ronaldo was at Real Madrid.
Marco Reus explained the difference between his and Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s careers
Despite being one of the best midfielders of this generation, Marco Reus hasn’t been as successful as his peers. Reus, who has spent almost his entire career at Borussia Dortmund, has never won the Bundesliga. He has just won two DFB-Pokal and two DFB Supercups. He did reach the UEFA Champions League final in 2013 but lost against Bayern Munich.
The reason behind Reus not achieving much success is that the German midfielder has been blighted by injuries. He even suffered a cruciate ligament tear in the DFB-Pokal final in 2017. However, looking back, Reus hasn’t been much frustrated with his injuries. He once explained in an interview with GOAL that most players’ careers are full of ups and downs.
Reus, however, did name two exceptions- Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. He said, “Normally during a career, it’s not just going up, except maybe Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, but stagnation or even setbacks are also included.”
Reus turned 34 earlier this year and has a few years left in him. The German star will be hoping to have a successful season with Dortmund this year and be included in the team for the upcoming Euros 2024.
