Manchester United and Liverpool faced off in a highly anticipated Premier League clash on Sunday, December 17. Liverpool has maintained their top-four spot for the larger part of the season. The Red Devils had an up-and-down campaign so far, finding themselves in the top half of the table.
However, after yesterday’s clash, Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk had something to say about Manchester United’s approach to the game. van Dijk in his post-match interview stated – “We (Liverpool) had the most of the ball and created some opportunities. There was only one team trying to win the game”.
The Reds defender further opined that his team was “superior” on the day. He inflicted that United had planned to play on the counter and would probably be “buzzing with a point”. However, former Manchester United legend Roy Keane hit back at Virgil van Dijk for his opinions.
🗣️ Roy Keane: “Virgil van Dijk had arrogance coming out of him, dishing Manchester United like that!”
“He needs a reminder himself. He’s playing for a club who have won one title in 30 odd years.”

Roy Keane in the post-match show asserted – “We heard van Dijk speaking there, obviously a lot of arrogance coming out of him, dissing United like that”. Further taking a dig at the Liverpool player, Roy stated – “He (van Dijk) needs to be reminded himself, he’s playing for a club that’s won one title in 30-odd years”.
Criticizing Virgil’s “only one team wanted to win” and United is “buzzing with a point” statements Roy opined that the Red Devils are at a difficult stage, the place where Liverpool have been themselves for years. “So maybe that bit of arrogance backfired on him today”, the United legend expressed.
Liverpool held by Manchester United at Anfield
It ended all fair and square between the Red Devils and Liverpool at the famous Anfield ground. Both the teams huffed and puffed but failed to score a single goal. There were chances in the game for both sides to grab a win and all three points, but as it stood the honors were shared on the night.

A win for Liverpool would have taken them to the top of the Premier League table. On the other hand, United would be somehow satisfied with a point, after their recent below-par performances. Anfield is a tough place to go and play against a high-flying Liverpool side. So, maybe the Red Devils had done well to get something out of the match in the form of a point.
With this point, United sees themselves leapfrogging to the seventh spot of this season’s Premier League table. They currently stand at 28 points, one point clear of eighth place West Ham United. United fans and hierarchy would hope that they build on the back of this result and get some wins under their belt moving forward in the season.
