Canadian soccer star Alphonso Davies is a self-proclaimed Lionel Messi fan. Davies has frequently expressed his love and admiration for the Argentine soccer legend. Most recently, Davies talked about Lionel Messi’s highly anticipated debut for Inter Miami. Several celebrities like David and Victoria Beckham, LeBron James, Sergio Aguero, and Serena Williams attended Messi’s debut match.
While Alphonso Davies couldn’t physically attend the match, he did watch it on TV. Lionel Messi took the US fans by storm as he scored the winner in the dying seconds of the match against Cruz Azul in the 93rd minute. During a video interview conducted by CBS, Davies revealed how he stayed up late to watch the former PSG star’s Inter Miami debut.

He said, “Uh, yeah, I mean, I actually watched the first game that he played. It was a good game. A really good game. The last goal, a free kick, Everybody couldn’t believe it, I was holding my head like this. But it was outstanding. I think he’s gonna enjoy, and, uh, I just, uh, just a taste of Messi you know there’s more to come definitely.”

While talking about his feelings on hearing about Messi’s move to Miami, Davies said, “Yeah, it’s great knowing that he’s (Messi) playing in a league where I came from, where I developed my skills to move over here. I think it’s really good, not just for football fans but for the MLS in general.” The Bayern Munich star also talked about the impact Messi and Busquets are going to have on the MLS.
Alphonso Davies’ record whilst facing Lionel Messi
Over the years, Lionel Messi and Alphonso Davies have faced each other on three occasions. However, Messi has been on the losing side all three times. The first time Messi and Davies played against each other was in 2020 during the Champions League quarterfinal. In what was one of the most embarrassing nights for Messi’s FC Barcelona, the Spanish club was defeated 8-2 by Davies’ Bayern Munich.
Messi and Davies again played against each other during the previous edition’s Champions League round of 16 ties. Although Davies didn’t prominently feature in the match, he did make an excellent challenge to deny Messi a clear goal-scoring chance in the second leg. Davies’ side once again frustrated the 2022 World Cup hero, this time in a PSG jersey.
