From 2021 to 2022, two loan spells to Derby County and Birmingham City followed before the final season at Manchester United in 2022/23. In his last season at United, he made zero appearances for the main squad. He made only five appearances in the Premier League 2 which prompted the English center back to move to Luton for regular game time.
With Luton, Mengi has become one of the most promising youngsters in the league. He is currently leading the U-21 players with the highest percentage of defensive duels won in Europe’s top 5 leagues. The tall center-back has also represented England’s national side in Under 20, 18, and 16 setups.
Mengi’s performances this season puts him with an outside chance to fly with the England squad in the summer for Euro 2024 in Germany. The selection to the England squad will most probably raise his stock within the Premier League hopefuls. Manchester United are struggling with defensive issues, with injuries to key players. It is easy to conclude that United made a mistake in letting Mengi go for such a low transfer fee.
