As this NFL season is going on in full swing, many teams are making developmental changes. The most recent team to join this list is the Pittsburgh Steelers. The team has been having a terrible time this season. Considering that, the Steelers have fired their offensive coordinator, Matt Canada.
Mike Tomlin, the head coach of the Steelers, recently announced the firing of Matt Canada. It’s worth noting that this is the first time since 1941 that the team has made a change in the middle of the season. Tomlin made the official announcement for the same and wished the former offensive coordinator luck for his future.

“Matt Canada has been relieved of his duties as offensive coordinator. I appreciate Matt’s hard work and dedication and I wish him the best moving forward in his career,” he said.
It’s worth noting that the Steelers have been struggling with their offense this season. The team is 6-4 this season with a negative point differential of -29. Now, it’ll be worth watching if the change will help the team go back to winning ways or not.
When did Matt Canada join the Pittsburgh Steelers?
Born in January 1972, Matt Canada used to play as a quarterback in his high school. In the beginning, he served as the head coach for several universities Northern Illinois University. After that, he began his career as an offensive coordinator in 2013 with North Carolina State University. He then served in the role for various universities till 2018.
After that, the 51-year-old began his NFL career in January 2020. It happened after the Pittsburgh Steelers hired him as their QB coach. Matt Canada then became the offensive coordinator for the team after a year in January 2021. Canada became the OC by replacing the then-OC Randy Fichtner.
The team must have had a lot of belief in Canada when they made him the offensive coordinator. However, it backfired on them as the team struggled a lot ever since he took charge. The team’s offense has been getting one of the lowest ranks in the NFL ever since Canada became the OC.
Despite the 23-19 win over the Green Bay Packers, the Steelers decided to fire Matt Canada. Before that, the team had lost the game against the Cleveland Browns. Now, only time will tell who will be the next OC for the team.
How much did Canada earn with the Steelers?
When Mike Tomlin announced that the team had released offensive coordinator Matt Canada, it surprised everyone. That’s primarily because some reports in early 2023 suggested that he signed a contract extension with the Steelers. As per ESPN’s reporter Brooke Pryor, the Indiana-born OC signed a contract extension with the team last year.
The exact details of Canada’s contract are not available. However, if the news of the extension were true, it means that his initial contract was for 2 years. According to reports, the NFL OC was earning a monthly salary of $60,000 with the team. As for his yearly salary, it reportedly summed up to over $1.1 million.
This further means that Matt Canada has earned around $3 million with the Steelers till now as their OC. With all his earnings, he holds a massive net worth of $5 million currently. Now, it’ll be interesting to see which team Canada joins next in the NFL.
