Super Bowl 2023 will take place inside the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The venue will host the final game between Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs on February 12. With both teams exceeding expectations with their performances, it is really hard to predict who may come out on top to win the prestigious competition.
However, Super Bowl is not just a football show anymore. From Hollywood celebrities in attendance to massive goosebumps-inducing performances, Super Bowl is a celebration of American culture. Just how popular is Super Bowl exactly? Recently reports suggested that a mere 30-second advertisement spot during the Super Bowl halftime was going to cost a whopping $7 million.

One might wonder why there is such a craze for the Super Bowl half-time spots. Over the years, NFL has managed to turn the half-time shows just as appealing as the game itself. Usually, some big celebrity performs during the halftime show every year! As fans know, Rihanna is going to be performing during the halftime show of his year’s mega event.
Why is NFL not paying Rihanna for her Super Bowl 2023 performance?
Although the game itself generates a lot of money, National Football League (NFL) does not pay the performers. As a result, Rihanna will be performing for free during the Super Bowl halftime show. However, it does not cost Rihanna anything to put on the show. The league takes care of all the production costs related to the show. For example, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez’s show in 2020 cost a whopping $12 million to put on!

But the artists did not have to worry about it at all, as NFL paid the entire amount. From the production costs to staff wages, the league covered it all. So one may ask why the artists agree to do a free show when a paid concert would earn them a lot. While that is certainly true, nothing matches the audience that a Super Bowl game gets.
According to a report, the game last year had 99.18 million people watching. However, the half-time show itself had 110 million people tune in. Hip-Hop legends Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, and Eminem performed in the show among others. So the large audience automatically results in sales bumps for the performers.
This year, it is estimated that even more people will be tuning in. Hence, Rihanna is taking advantage of that and it is rumored that she will drop her newest album during the show. One can imagine the impact it may have on the album sale. So performers always relish the opportunity to perform in the half-time show. Although there is no monetary gain, the prestige alone is satisfying.
