Recently, Curry made an appearance on ‘CBS Morning‘ to talk about his new children’s book. During the interview, the host asked rapid-fire questions to the Warriors’ point guard. When asked about the best trash talk that he has received, Curry replied, “That my dad paid the refs when I was in high school.” He explained this was a chant from his rival high school student section.
Furthermore, Steph Curry continued to reveal what the whole high school chant was as he said, “Dad pays the refs, and Daddy can’t help you.” The student section of the rival high school chanted this throughout the game. “So it still kind of stays with me,” the rising star added after mentioning that this trash talk was one of the first ones that he had received.
A look at Stephen Curry’s high school career
Stephen Curry was born in Akron, Ohio to his parents, Sonya and Dell Curry. He grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina as his father, Dell, was playing for the Charlotte Hornets. Curry attended Charlotte Christian High School and his career wasn’t exactly like one would expect for an NBA star. Notably, he was ranked lower as the No. 60 point guard in the nation and the No. 300 player overall.
In his masterclass, Curry revealed that he didn’t try for the varsity team as a freshman because he felt a little scared and nervous. “I think I took the easy way out trying to play JV and never really putting myself out there and shooting for the moon,” he reflected. Furthermore, Curry revealed that halfway through his junior varsity, he was starting to regret it as he felt that he was good enough to play at the next level.

In an interview, Curry said, “I saw my dad and how he carried himself as a professional and it helped me transition into the NBA.” On the other hand, Dell has expressed that he feels that his son, Steph, is definitely better than he was. Coming from a basketball family has surely been an advantage for the Warriors‘ star but he has undeniably worked hard to achieve the level of success that he is currently at.
