There have been rumors surrounding Sony’s PlayStation 5 (PS5) Pro for quite some time now. Believed to be a revision to the ninth-generation gaming console, the PS5 Pro is expected to be greatly more powerful than its base version which launched back in 2020.
Adding to the heap of rumors, a new leak has recently surfaced online giving insights into what specs the new version could include. The information was leaked by a user on the ResetEra forum. The post gives a rather detailed glimpse into what the future of the PlayStation 5 could potentially look like. Apart from the specs, the user also leaked a potential release date and the codename for the upcoming machine.
PS5 Pro leaked features
Earlier, multiple rumors and leaks had hinted that a compact-sized 1TB version of the PS5 was in the works. It turned out to be true with Sony officially launching the PS5 Slim in October. Notably, the PS5 Slim came with no performance upgrades. The only difference was that this one was slimmer than the original console.
However, that won’t be the case with the rumored PS5 Pro. It is said to bring along a significant hardware refresh to the current console generation, just as the PS4 Pro did to the PS4.
As per the leaked post on ResetEra, the PS5 Pro will feature an AMD Zen 2 CPU with a dynamic frequency peaking at 4.4GHz. Furthermore, the GPU will reportedly be a Radeon custom RDNA3 architecture with a target frequency of 2GHz and 14 -29 TFlops.
As far as the memory is concerned, PlayStation 5 Pro is rumored to come with a 16GB DDR6 at 576 GB/s bandwidth. Additionally, it is also rumored to feature XDNA2 NPU, an updated architecture announced by AMD that focuses on AI. This architecture is said to be crucial in Sony’s efforts to offer “stable upscaled 4K output at higher than 30 FPS.”
Apparently, the new version of PS5 is codenamed ‘Trinity,’ bringing together three key technologies. These three are fast storage, accelerated ray tracing, and upscaling. Similarly, it was earlier reported that AMD system-on-chip (SOC) has been codenamed ‘Viola.’ Leakers have also established a connection of these codenames to Shakespeare’s literature.
PS5 Pro release date
It was earlier reported that keeping in mind, Sony’s past track record and the arrival of PS4 Pro, next year’s holiday release may be when PS5 releases, i.e., around November or December 2024. However, the recent leak suggests that the PlayStation maker is expecting a September 2024 release, which happens to be a couple of months preceding its earlier rumored launch.
The rumored launch window and the leaked specs go in line with previous leaks and rumors. That being said, players that reminded that Sony is yet to officially comment on the PS5 Pro. Thus it is advised to take this information with a grain of salt.
