The developer of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is reportedly expanding its catalog of games by adding a new genre to its list. The makers of the popular battle royale title are reportedly working on a new extraction shooter game.
Extraction shooters are a subgenre of shooter games that are generally defined by Player vs. Player vs. Environment (PvPvE) battles in sandbox maps. Here, players can “extract” whenever they want, thus giving it the name extraction shooters.

Over the past few years, extraction shooters have emerged as a popular genre. Some of the leading extraction shooters in recent times include Escape From Tarkov and Hunt: Showdown, alongside the well-liked DMZ mode in Call of Duty: Warzone. There are quite some more extraction shooters on cards for the coming year or two.
PUBG Black Budget release date
Recently, Krafton announced its latest financial report. In the reports, it confirmed that it is working on its latest game from PUBG Studios titled “Project Black Budget.” It will be an extraction shooter planned to be released in the second half of 2024. Currently, not a lot is known about the upcoming project except for the fact that it is an extraction-based shooter.
The developers also reported that the extraction shooter, Project Black Budget, will be released in the second half of 2024. Interestingly, the poster shared in the financial reports by Krafton had the name ‘PUBG Black Budget.’ It could possibly just be an internal name for the project, however, it is not confirmed yet.
The game adds to the list of extraction shooters that have joined the market in recent years. Developers and publishers seem to be confident that the genre is the next big craze. Nonetheless, more often than not, extraction-based shooters have somehow failed to miss the mark with the gaming community.
First-person shooter superhits such as Call of Duty and Battlefield have also tried to join the extraction shooter genre, adding their own spin. However, both ended up abandoning support for their respective games soon after release.
Krafton’s latest PUBG spinoff is, interestingly, the second high-profile extraction shooter announcement of the year. Earlier, Bungie had announced a similar title named Marathon Reboot. In addition to these two, Embark Studios also has an extraction shooter titled Arc Raiders in the works. It looks like fans can expect some variety in the world of PvPvE shooters in the coming years.
Notably, the team at Krafton is no stranger to delivering massive hits. Its biggest game, PUBG, is a testament to the tremendous success that the devs have enjoyed. The game holds multiple world records, including being the first video game to hit 2 million concurrent players on Steam. It still flaunts the record for the most concurrent players of all time on Steam at 3.2 million players.
And with the same team that was involved in the development of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) working on PUBG Black Budget, it will be interesting to see how the developer fairs this time around.
