SUMMARY
- Recently the source code of GTA 5 leaked that revealed several Rockstar plans.
- One such revelation was the cancellation of multiple titles the company had planned to make.
The recently leaked source code of GTA 5 has sent waves of shock across the community as well as at Rockstar Games. The source codes leaked online have revealed a lot of details regarding Rockstars plans and more.
One of the biggest pieces of information to come to light was the cancelation of multiple titles that Rockstar had planned. However, unfortunately, these projects did not see the light of the day. Reports were suggesting that Rockstar may have possibly canceled the titles for GTA Online.
Another major development to come forward was that of as many as eight GTA 5 DLCs being scrapped. These DLCs were also reportedly affected by the success of GTA Online. Additionally, a new title named GTA Tokyo was also in the making however, for some unknown and unofficial reasons it did not happen.
GTA Tokyo
There is not much known about GTA Tokyo. However, reports suggest that Rockstar Games was considering making a “full” Grand Theft Auto game. It would be set in Tokyo. The developers had even sent staff to the Japanese city for a research trip.

The Japanese-themed Grand Theft Auto was planned for PlayStation 2. It would provide a new setting for the franchise. Typically, Rockstar Games is known to base around the same few settings such as that of the atmospheric Liberty City of GTA 4 and the reimagined Vice City in GTA 6. Thus, a Tokyo setting would have been a much-needed change for this IP.
By what is known so far GTA Tokyo was likely to be a game full of potential. In recent times, game franchises such as Yakuza have demonstrated the potential for open-world style games set in the streets of Japan. Rockstar could potentially dive into the racing and the popular car culture of this setting, thus making it one of the most intriguing narratives.
Why was GTA Tokyo canceled?
Sources close to Rockstar Games had said that the road system was seen to be problematic when it comes to the GTA Tokyo setting. And it ended up becoming one of the major reasons why the idea was canned. Additionally, the source said that as time passed Rockstar realized the difficulty in moving Grand Theft Auto outside of the USA. This is because Rockstar Games has firmly embedded the franchise in the USA.
There are several staple elements from the series, from brands to cars, that Rockstar would likely have to change if the future GTA was set somewhere else. Additionally, Rockstar’s parent company Take Two had also filed trademark applications in 2003 for GTA Tokyo.
Along with it, the parent company also filed trademarks for GTA: Bogota and GTA: Sin City. Notably, none of those ever materialized.
