SUMMARY
- Baldur's Gate 2 proved its excellence and was crowned Game of the Year 2023.
- The game has had mod support for a while now but not officially.
The modding community for various games has increased manifold in recent years. Almost all games in recent times have mods, whether official or unofficial. Looking at the widespread use of mods and the activeness of the modding community several game developers are officially providing mod support in games.
In November 2023, CD Projekt Red announced official mod support for its celebrated game The Witcher. Joining the suit is Larian Studios.
Baldur’s Gate 3 to have official mod support
Baldur’s Gate 3’s last week’s hotfix destroyed a lot of mods, including a famous tool. Post that, developer Larian Studios, has now announced that it is working on offering official mod support in the game.
Larian Studios‘ Director of Publishing Michael Douse recently addressed some important concerns from the modding community on X. In the post, he mentioned that the team was working on a system, which they plan to use to implement the cross-platform support, however, it still needs to be tested and isn’t yet finished.
“We’ve been working on a robust, cross-platform plan for mod support to be released,” he said.
We have a system but it needs to be tested and still requires work. We’re excited about it. I understand that it suck’s when the game is updated and mods break. Our community teams will start talking with and looping in modding community. For now, work continues 🙂

The modding community of Baldur’s Gate 3 has been facing a lack of support way before the game left early access. It becomes difficult for modders to continually update or work around the problems that official patches create.
Last week’s hotfix #18 broke Baldur’s Gate 3 Script Extender. It is one of the most popular tools used by modders as well as players who use mods. There are multiple such instances where a patch broke mods.
When will Baldur’s Gate 3 get mod support?
According to a senior community strategist named ‘WombatMedic’ in the official Larian Studios Discord channel, developers have been working on the mod support for a while. It is expected to be a long process, however, it is likely to arrive with the next big patch, which is “several months away.”
She wrote, “We absolutely love that we have such an active modding community across our titles […] We want to continue making sure you’re getting the best possible experience, which is why we frequently patch the game, although this does inevitably mean that each new patch or hotfix has the potential to become incompatible with your favourite mods.”
Wombat also responded to concerns from users on Discord saying the team also needs to do a better job communicating resources and support.
She says, “Together with the platform holders, we are working on making this a reality, and are forming a team to support mod curation. We’re aiming to offer modding support for things like classes, UI, customization, spells, and certain assets and game mechanics.”
Game of the Year 2023 getting mod support would act as a great boost to the modding community. Not to forget it will also help the players enjoy an even better experience of the game without any fear.
