Edward Smith Fatu or Umaga was an exceptional pro wrestler. He with his outstanding in-ring skills thoroughly entertained the WWE Universe. Many fans might be aware of the fact that he was a member of the renowned Anoa’i family. However, what the fans might not be aware of is the fact that Umaga was released from the Stamford-based promotion not once but twice.
Umaga initially became a part of WWE in 2001. Thereafter he got engaged in several feuds as a member of a tag team. However, his run in the company didn’t last for a long time. He was released from WWE in 2003. The real reason for his release was his involvement in a bar fight after a WWE event.
However, he eventually returned to the Stamford-based promotion. Umaga once again had a short run in the company before being released for the second and final time. Though, Umaga had a short run in the company fans often discuss his career in WWE to date.
Taking a look at Umaga’s run in the WWE
Umaga walked into WWE in 2001. Thereafter he took up the name ‘Jamal’. He became a part of a tag team with ‘Rosey’, named ‘3-Minute Warning’. The duo went on to attack several wrestlers during their time as a tag team. However, the team eventually came to an end when Jamal was released from his WWE contract in 2003.
After his first release from the Stamford-based promotion, he became a part of All Japan Pro Wrestling. During his time in AJPW, he made a huge name for himself. However, he eventually returned to the Triple H-led promotion in 2006.
Following his return, he was given the ring name ‘Umaga’. He then went on to create a memorable run in the company. Not to mention, he won the WWE Intercontinental Championship twice.
However, his second run in the promotion came to an end when he was again released by WWE in 2009. The company took the decision to release him because he violated the promotion’s Wellness Policy.
In fact, his denial to join rehabilitation resulted in his termination. However, it was later rumored that he was set to make his WWE return at Royal Rumble 2010, unfortunately, that didn’t happen.
The tragic death of Umaga
The popular WWE Superstar suffered a tragic death. In December 2009, Umaga’s wife found him in an unresponsive and critical state in their home. He was immediately taken to a hospital, where it was reported that he was suffering a heart attack. However, he was kept on life support. But, a second heart attack ultimately resulted in his death at the young age of 36 years.

Umaga’s death came as a huge loss for the pro wrestling world. His demise at such a young age was absolutely unacceptable. However, he during his active years created several memorable moments that will remain imprinted in the hearts of his fans forever.
