Joe Rogan has a knack for having some of the most interesting discussions. As such, we have seen guests from numerous backgrounds discuss a variety of topics on his podcast. Notably, one of his more ‘eye-catching’ guests happened to be Yeonmi Park.
For those unaware, Yeonmi Park is an author, activist, and most importantly, a defector from North Korea. As such, Yeonmi and her family fled from North Korea in 2007 to China, before making their way to South Korea in 2009. Eventually, Yeonmi made her way to the United States in 2014 and shared her traumatic experiences and journey with the world.
As such, Park rose to fame after her speech at the 2014 One Young World Summit about escaping North Korea. Moreover, the speech was viewed more than 5 million times on YouTube as well. Since then, Park has released her book ‘In Order to Live: A North Korean Girl’s Journey to Freedom’ and become somewhat of a social media personality with her YouTube channel, “Voice of North Korea by Yeonmi Park”.
Yeonmi Park on Joe Rogan’s Podcast
Thus, it only made sense for Joe Rogan to invite the activist on his podcast. On the show, Joe would learn some of the most harrowing details about Park’s escape from North Korea. As such, Rogan got a first-hand account of the harsh realities the people in North Korea have to face.
Speaking about her escape, Yeonmi says, “The tragic thing for North Koreans is that we cannot even say goodbye to our loved ones. So if we got caught on the journey, and if my father knew that we were escaping, he’s gonna be punished so much”.
As it turns out, it’s rather difficult to escape from North Korea. Moreover, when people do escape, everyone they’ve known face the consquences of their loved ones leaving the country.
Andrew Schulz’s Comments about Yeonmi Park make Joe Rogan nervous
However, that is not the only talking point about Yeonmi. Clearly, she cuts a very attractive figure and has a charming and heartwarming personality about her as well. Speaking about getting her on his podcast, Andrew Schulz had a few things to ask the UFC commentator.
“Yeonmi Park? Her story is crazy,” says Joe. Andrew adds, “She got some crazy thangs”, insinuating something completely different. “What? Don’t you do it,” says Rogan, understanding Andrew’s intent.
“We’re just trying to talk about the heavies bro,” says Andrew as the room explodes into laughter. The long-running joke about ‘the heavies’ was thus born. To date, people still use the heavy-lifting emoji under her pictures as a result.
Eventually, Schulz was able to get Park onto his podcast and had a rather squirmish time trying to explain it to her as well. Explaining to Park, Schulz said, “So the most polite way to say it in English, is the heavies”.
Thus, Yeonmi was finally able to understand the joke and found it to be rather hilarious. As such, Andrew would then go on to Joe Rogan’s podcast to share the experience of explaining ‘the heavies’ to Park as well.
