Dustin Poirier has made it very clear that he wishes to be a part of UFC 300. In what will be a milestone event for the organization, the UFC is expected to put out an electric card. With that said, Dustin reveals that he would absolutely love to be a part of the momentous occasion.
Previously, ‘The Diamond‘ suffered a devastating loss at the hands of Justin Gaethje at UFC 291. Having come in as the favorite for their BMF title matchup, many were left stunned when ‘The Highlight’ pulled out a head kick to seal the deal. As a result, Poirier is now #3 in the lightweight rankings without a clear opponent.
Speaking about what would interest him, Poirier revealed his thoughts on The MMA Hour. “I’m just too small for 170. People don’t understand the fight game and the weight cutting and how big these guys are. You can’t weigh 173 lbs, walking around, skip breakfast, weigh in, and then fight the next day at 173 lbs when these guys are going to be 195”. Thus, Poirier clarifies that he would not be very keen on moving up in order to have more opponents.
Although Dustin Poirier has been open to challenges at 170 lbs in the past, he now seems apprehensive about it. In the past, he has spoken about how he would willingly fight Nate Diaz at welterweight. In addition to that, Dustin has often spoken about wanting to fight Colby Covington at some point, which would also take place at welterweight.
Dustin Poirier has a bitter rivalry with Colby Covington
Understandably, with Dustin Poirier not too keen on fighting at 170, it pours cold water over a potential fight with Colby Covington. In the past, the two have had a heated rivalry, especially with Poirier also being close friends with Jorge Masvidal. Whilst Masvidal had lived and trained with Covington, Poirier had trained with the former interim welterweight champ at American Top Team.
Since Colby’s fallout with Masvidal, Poirier has also sided with the latter, much to the former’s dismay. As a result, Covington has hated Poirier and always left nasty remarks about him, calling him ‘Louisiana swamp trash’ and ‘Soyboy Poirier’ on numerous occasions. Thus, the 34-year-old lightweight does not get along well with the three-time welterweight title challenger.
Previously, Colby seemingly stepped up his pursuits by wanting to fight Poirier in an interview with The Schmo. In an NSFW rant, Colby said, “So Dustin, you’re a f***ing coward, your wife is a h** and she has fake t**s on her chest, and you’re a piece of s*** father.” Further, Covington also clarified that he was not picking on a smaller guy, as they used to weigh around the same when training together. Although ‘Chaos‘ would willingly fight Poirier, he will first look to secure the welterweight title at UFC 296.
As for Poirier, he has often revealed that he would happily accept a fight with Covington. Although he believes that most welterweights would have a huge size advantage against him, he could be swayed to rethink his decision. Whilst it is clear that Dustin will never be a part of the welterweight division, a potential one-off with Covington could still happen. If a fight were to materialize, who would you back to win?
