It is well known that former UFC welterweight contender, Nate Diaz is a vegan. The Stockton native who is known for his anti-hero persona and trash-talking demeanor, has been a vegan since he was 18. The fighter has allegedly fought his whole career on a vegan diet. While former BMF title contender thinks it is a good idea, the UFC commentator Joe Rogan has a different idea.
Rogan is an apparent critic of the vegan diet and even considers it unnatural for human beings. The podcaster also claims that Diaz isn’t a real vegan as he is known to consume eggs and fish. On his podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience, this is what he had to say about Diaz, “Nah, he doesn’t eat vegan,” Rogan stated. “They keep saying that. That’s not true. I mean, he eats eggs and fish, and I mean, I don’t know if he’s still eating fish.”
“But he certainly was at one point of time,” he continued. “But the vegans love to claim him. Because it’s nonsense. They just tried to find just one person who’s like elite on a vegan diet.”
According to Rogan, a vegan diet is not just detrimental to human health, but also to the environment in general. He claims farming is much worse for the planet than raising cattle for the purpose of consumption.
The real reason why Nate Diaz decided to be a vegan
Nate Diaz was a pioneer among UFC fighters for Veganism. Adopting the lifestyle at a young age, the fighter has not looked back. The fighter turned vegan after his elder brother, Nick Diaz introduced him to the lifestyle. In an interview with UFC Fight Pass, Diaz said he tried veganism to become stronger and more focused. After his first fight as a vegan, he went back to meat and dairy.
This reportedly made him sick for over a month. Following this incident, the fighter turned vegan for good, apart from some exceptions. However, the “vegan” martial artist has admitted to consuming dairy and eggs in moderation.
His foray into veganism has also inspired other UFC fighters too. UFC women’s strawweight Karolina Kowalkiewicz became vegan in 2019. This was in response to Hashimoto’s disease, which causes one’s own immune system to attack the thyroid gland.
Other UFC fighters that are vegan are Nate’s brother, Nick Diaz, and UFC featherweight Alex Caceres. Caceres decided to become vegan at the age of 24, when he adopted the philosophy of ‘you are what you eat.’ So what are your thoughts on the matter? Let us know in the community down below.
