In her comeback match, she managed to secure a win against a top-20 opponent, Veronika Kudermetova at the Western and Southern Open. However, her knee started to bother her again in her match with Zheng Qinwen to whom she lost in the Round of 32 of the same tournament.
Just 5 days later, Williams was scheduled to play her opening match in Cleveland at the WTA 250 tournament However, amidst her chronic knee issue, Williams withdrew from the warm-up tournament scheduled one week before the US Open. Voicing her disappointment she said, “I’m so sorry that I’m not going to be able to make it to Cleveland. I was really looking forward to it.”
