Czech tennis player Marketa Vondrousova made waves when she lifted the Wimbledon trophy this year. The left-handed Vondrousova turned her career around, despite undergoing major surgeries on her left wrist last year. From being a tourist in London to becoming the latest Wimbledon champion, Marketa’s story is almost like a fairy tale. Following her victory, Vondrousova made a promise and it seems she has kept her word.
Marketa had promised to get a new tattoo to immortalize her maiden Slam. And she has stayed true to her promise. After defeating Mayar Sherif in the first round of the Canadian Open, Maketa revealed she got a matching tattoo with her sister.
“A small W,” said Vondousova, during a press conference. However, she did not reveal which part of her body she got inked on. The ‘W’ tattoo was inspired by the All England Club.

Marketa is no stranger to tattoos. In fact, her tattoos are an integral part of her identity. Moreso, after her victory at SW19, which made her a household name.
In the lead-up to the final, Vondrousova revealed that she had a running bet with her coach. The bet is a straightforward one- he gets a tattoo for every slam she wins. But has her coach kept up his end of the bargain? “I think I’m going to go with coach in New York,” Marketa said, with a laugh.
How did Marketa Vondrousova fare in her first tournament since Wimbledon?
Marketa Vondrousova had a very promising start to the Canadian Open. She picked up right from where she had left off at SW19. The Czech star defeated Mayar Sherif quite easily in the first round, winning 6-4, 6-2.
In the second round, Marketa clashed with Caroline Wozniacki. This was the Danish player’s first tournament since she retired from tennis 3 years ago. However, Marketa defeated Caroline too.
Wozniacki, however, put up a great fight. In the first tournament since her return, Wozniacki did not seem like she had been away from the sport for so long. But the Czech player turned out to be a hurdle that Wozniacki could not overcome. Despite fighting valiantly, Marketa defeated her 6-2, 7-5.

Marketa Vondrousova’s next opponent in the Round of 16 was the rising tennis star Coco Gauff. The teen was in red-hot form as she took on Marketa.
Coco, fresh off her title win in Washington, absolutely steamrolled past Marketa in Montreal. Gauff even served her a bagel in the last set, winning 10 out of 11 games consecutively to make it to the semifinal.
Even though Marketa got knocked out by the teen, she will take heart in the way she played. Can she carry her Grand Slam momentum into the US Open and add another tattoo to her growing collection?
