The devastating earthquake has now claimed the lives of over 40,000 people in Turkey and Syria. While the entire soccer world joined in to send their condolences to Christian Atsu’s family, here is a look at Atsu’s last goal before his death.
Christian Atsu‘s final moment as a soccer player came on February 5, just a few hours before the earthquake struck Turkey. It was during a Super Lig match between Atsu’s Hatayspor and Kasimpasa. The game was going to be a goalless draw, but Atsu had some other plans. During the 97th minute of the game, Atsu scored a stunning free kick. With virtually the last kick of the game, Atsu sealed the victory for Hatayspor.

Atsu’s goal brought jubilation to the Hatayspor bench. The former Newcastle United star’s goal meant that Hatayspor finally moved out of the relegation zone in the Super Lig. As soon as the referee blew the full-time whistle, Atsu’s teammates mobbed him and celebrated the crucial victory.
What happened to Christian Atsu?
Christian Atsu lost his young life in the calamitous earthquake which struck parts of Turkey and Syria. On February 6, when the earthquake struck Turkey, Atsu was inside Hatayspor’s headquarters in Antakya. While there was no immediate news about Christian Atsu, the following day, Hatayspor stated that they had managed to recover Atsu and he was recovering in the hospital after some minor injuries.
However, Atsu’s agent, Nana Sechere, revealed that the news was untrue and Atsu had still not been found. However, a pair of shoes belonging to the soccer star was recovered from the rubble. Atsu’s wife, Marie-Claire Rupio also stated that while Atsu is still missing, she is praying for his life and that she is hopeful that Atsu is still alive.

However, yesterday, the worst fears came true when Christian Atsu’s body was found beneath a pile of rubble. Atsu’s agent, Nana Sechere, and his former agent, Murat Uzunmehmet, both confirmed the news. While there’s no statement from Atsu’s wife, Marie-Claire, yet, the entire soccer world joins together to send their condolences and prayers in the memory of Christian Atsu.
