Soccer has over the years seen some devastating injuries to players during matches. While some of them were career-defining, some pushed players out of action for a longer period. However, an incident that has shaken fans all around the world took place in an Albanian Super League match related to KF Egnatias’ Raphael Dwamena.
The Albanian Super League match was played between KF Egnatia and Partizani. However, reportedly just a few minutes after the twentieth-minute mark of the game Egnatia’s striker, Raphael Dwamena collapsed on the field. The reports further suggest that players from both sides rushed towards the striker to check on him.
The match was halted and Dwamena was reportedly given adequate medical attention. However, as per further reports, the federation has inflicted that the 28-year-old Egnatias’ striker “passed away”. The incident took place on Saturday, November 11, 2023.
According to the reports, the cause of the player’s death has not been entirely determined until now by the Albanian soccer authorities. However, some of the reports do give a hint into the heart-related problems suffered by the player in the past. A certain report (by Sportstar) referred to the cause of the death as a cardiac arrest.
One of Dwamena’s former clubs Levante expressed their grief over the player’s death. The club issued a statement stating – “Our thoughts are with his family and his loved ones in these difficult moments. His legacy in our club will last forever”, on one of their socials.
Raphael Dwamena’s career and the teams he played for
The 28-year-old striker reportedly made his debut for the Ghana international team on June 11, 2017. He has played eight matches for his country on the international stage in his career and has scored two goals during these matches.
The player’s prominent club spells came with clubs like – FC Zurich, Levante UD, FC Liefering, and his recent club KF Egnatia. For the Switzerland-based club FC Zurich, Dwamena played a total of 56 matches, having a total goal contribution of 43 (including goals and assists).
In Spain for Levante UD, the 28-year-old reportedly appeared in a total of 15 matches, having one goal and two assists to his name. For Austrian club FC Liefering, the striker played a total of 27 matches, having scored six goals for the club.
For his recent Albanian club, KF Egnatia, the Ghana-born player was performing consistently. In 36 outings for the club, the forward had already churned up 24 goals and further provided 10 assists. Soccer fraternities around the world are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the player’s passing away.
