Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has his sights on Premier League club Southampton’s vacant manager role, according to reports. The 35-year-old is said to be interested in the position, which became available after the club sacked Ralph Hasenhuttl last week.
Rooney, who is currently the manager of D.C. United, is reportedly keen to take on the challenge of managing a Premier League club. The former England captain has been in charge since July 2022.
He has also been linked with the vacant manager’s job at Sheffield United, but it is believed that he is more interested in the Southampton role. Rooney is said to be keen to prove himself in the top flight and believes that he can help the Saints achieve their ambitions.

On 15 January 2021, he retired from playing after being appointed permanent manager of Derby. Rooney was named England manager for Soccer Aid 2020 along with Allardyce and Seaman, with Sam Allardyce as goalkeeper coach.
Derby was relegated to League One at the end of the 2021–22 season, and Rooney resigned as manager on 24 June 2022. On 12 July 2022, Rooney was announced as head coach for D.C. United. He replaced outgoing manager Hernán Losada.
