The NFL has seen many superstars excel on the gridiron, and Rob Gronkowski is one of them. The star tight end set the standards high for all the tight ends in the league with his excellent gameplay. Though he retired in 2021 after an 11-year NFL career, he recently said something regarding his potential return.
Rob Gronkowski recently appeared as a guest on Kay Adams’ show “Up & Adams”. During FanDuel TV’s show, the discussion shifted to the star player’s return to the league. Kay Adams asked Gronkowski whether he’d like to make a comeback to the NFL or not. To that, he gave a cheeky reply, saying that he could pretend that he “could still play”. “I love to pretend that I could still play… No, I can’t, I’m washed up. I just like to pretend,” he said.
The former star player further mentioned the one coach who could get him back to the NFL. Rob Gronkowski revealed that it’s New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll who could’ve done the deed. However, at the same time, he mentioned that it was not actually going to happen, as he was just kidding.
“Brian Daboll wants me on his roster, I know it… He can’t get me out of retirement, but he would have the best chance to”.
From the interview, one thing is clear: Rob Gronkowski has a great sense of humor. The NFL star discussed his potential comeback, but at the same time confirmed that it’s not going to happen.
Why did Rob Gronkowski retire?
Rob Gronkowski began his NFL career in 2010 when the New England Patriots drafted him as their 42nd pick. The star player proved his worth in his rookie season with his exceptional performance on the field. Throughout his career, he received 9286 yards, with 92 receiving TDs and 621 receptions. However, due to several reasons, Gronk retired twice in his career.
The Patriots’ tight end announced his retirement for the first time after the 2018 season when he was 29. At that time, Rob Gronkowski claimed that various injuries impacted his mental well-being. But he returned to the league in 2020 because Tom Brady reportedly wanted him to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
After that, Rob Gronkowski announced his final retirement in 2022, after Brady announced his retirement. In his 11-year career, Gronkowski won four Super Bowls and five Pro Bowls. He also held the record for the most touchdowns (18) in one season by a tight end.
Love the game. Definitely blessed with all the opportunities the game of football has given me, and relationships — obviously here in New England Patriots for nine seasons and down in Tampa for two… But done with football…,” he said while announcing his retirement.
Rob Gronkowski made sure that football fans remembered him even years after his retirement. He led the Patriots and the Buccaneers exceptionally well, along with legend Tom Brady.
