The current 2023-24 season was going fairly well for the young talent before tragedy hit him. Turns out, Barrett is not playing in the league as his younger brother, Nathan Barrett, suddenly died. The last game that the Duke product played was on Monday, March 11, against the Nuggets. During this, Barrett added 26 points, 7 rebounds, and 9 assists while being unaware of the tragedy that was going to hit him the very next day.

RJ Barrett’s younger brother breathed his last on March 12, 2024. This unfortunate news was announced on March 14 by Canada Basketball and the Toronto Raptors on behalf of the Barrett family. “It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the loss of our beloved son and brother, Nathan Tyler Barrett, who passed away on Tuesday, March 12, surrounded by his family, church, and friends”, the statement read.

Furthermore, in the statement, it was stated that while the family is devastated by this great loss, they continue to cherish the memories and time spent together. Notably, Barrett‘s younger brother’s cause of death has not been revealed. However, he has been described as a “God-fearing young man of strong character,” who was thoughtful, kind, loving, compassionate, creative, admirable, and driven.

Furthermore, Nathan’s former youth coach, Chris Stewart took to his Instagram to pay tribute to him. “Nathan was only with us for a short time in grade 7 before he moved to Florida but whenever he was back in Mississauga the boys connected,” he wrote. The basketball player, Barrett’s date of return to the court is unclear and his fans are sending prayers for him to process this precious loss.
