WWE Undisputed Universal Champion Roman Reigns is set to defend his title against Jey Uso in a “Tribal Combat” match at SummerSlam 2023. As we have seen throughout Roman’s title reign, he has always managed to come out on top during his title defenses, and he will be determined to do the same on August 5.
However, before his upcoming defense this Saturday at Ford Field Stadium, Roman recently opened up about his Tribal Combat match against cousin Jey Uso. It happened during a recent interview as Roman Reigns talked about the importance of his title match at WWE SummerSlam.
The Tribal Chief expressed his views about his match during his interview on ESPN’s First Take, where Roman Reigns appeared as a special guest. Not only Roman, but Roman’s Special Counsel, Paul Heyman, also accompanied him for the interview.
During the interview, Roman said, “Well, this Saturday it’s a lot like every other championship defense. This will be on the line, but what makes this so special in Tribal Combat is the title of The Tribal Chief will be on the line as well. The leadership of our family. This isn’t the right kind of table but the Head of the Table will be up for grabs. So, this will define the future of our family, our legacy, and our bloodline.”
Roman’s views about the Tribal Combat match at WWE SummerSlam clearly show how important it will be for Roman to successfully defend his Undisputed title. On the other hand, his cousin Jey Uso will give his best against Roman, as it will arguably be the biggest match of Jey’s entire professional wrestling career.
A look back at the history between Roman Reigns and Jey Uso
A lot of fans may think that Roman Reigns and Jey Uso‘s ongoing feud is the first time the cousins are up against each other. But, that’s not the case, as they have been involved in a memorable feud during the COVID era, which led to an epic Universal Championship match.
In the epic encounter that took place at 2020’s Hell in the Cell event, Roman Reigns defeated Jey Uso in one of the most memorable HITC matches in recent times. After the end of this feud, both of them were a part of The Bloodline, alongside Jimmy Uso and Solo Sikoa. However, the stable eventually ended on SmackDown’s June 15 episode, as The Usos turned on Roman and Solo Sikoa.
The Usos turning on their brothers led to a fabulous match at WWE MITB, which was won by The Usos, as Jey Uso became the first person to pin Roman in three and a half years. But this was not the end of their rivalry, as Solo Sikoa and Roman Reigns carried out an assault on The Usos on the July 7 episode of SmackDown. The assault left Jimmy Uso seriously injured and took him out of in-ring action for a long time.
Following Jimmy Uso’s injury in July, WWE did a tremendous job of building this storyline, which has taken all of us to a Tribal Combat match between Roman and Jey Uso at SummerSlam. It will be a one-of-a-kind encounter, as alongside Roman’s Undisputed title, his Tribal Chief title will also be on the line. It’ll be interesting to see how the match at SummerSlam turns out to be and who will end WWE SummerSlam 2023 as the “Tribal Chief.”
