Rey Mysterio shares his thoughts about WWE legend Eddie Guerrero
WWE superstar Rey Mysterio recently made an appearance on the ‘JAXXON PODCAST’. During that, he opened up about various topics. Meanwhile, the WWE Hall of Famer also talked about Eddie Guerrero. Rey was asked, “What was like the favorite tag team stable you’ve ever been able to work with?”
To this, Mysterio said, “Like, as far as partner-wise? Man, the run I had with Eddie.” He added that, according to him, Eddie Guerrero and him were one of the hottest tag teams in WWE. Rey said that as far as the love of the fans was concerned, what they did, they did it for the fans.
He said, “We try to get them hooked in and enjoy as much as they can whether it’s two hours or three hours show. Personally, for us, it would be just the 10 or 15 minutes that we spend in the ring.” Mysterio added that the connection he shared with Eddie was genuine.
He added, “So the fans saw through that and we were able to put two and two together and say this is a real team right here.” The WWE star then said that without any doubt, the level of connection Rey and Eddie had as rivals, they also had as tag team partners.
Rey said, “We started off as rivals first, and then eventually we became partners.” He then recalled his match against Eddie Guerrero at the 1997 Halloween Havoc. The WWE Hall of Famer stated that he believed that iconic match had put him on the map.
In that regard, it is worth mentioning that at Halloween Havoc 1997, a Title vs. Mask match between Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero took place with the WCW Cruiserweight Championship on the line. With that, the outcome of the match saw Mysterio defeat Guerrero to win the title.
Thus, it seems Rey considered Eddie the best tag partner of his career. Meanwhile, it is worth mentioning that Rey and Guerrero were good friends in real life. With that, it remains to be seen if the WWE Hall of Famer will open up more about his dear friend in the upcoming days.
Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero were one of the best tag teams in WWE
Rey Mysterio and Eddie Guerrero shared a long history together. Previously, during their time in World Championship Wrestling (WCW), Mysterio and Guerrero got involved in a feud. This resulted in their Title vs. Mask match at Halloween Havoc 1997, which Rey won. However, their feud continued, and Rey lost the title back to Eddie.
Moving ahead, Guerrero formed a stable named Latino World Order (LWO). He then asked Rey to join the stable. However, Mysterio kept refusing to join the faction and instead feuded with Eddie. However, Rey later lost a match to Guerrero and was forced to join the stable. With that, after the closure of WCW, both Rey and Eddie became part of the Stamford-based promotion, WWE.
During their time in WWE, Rey and Eddie teamed up and participated in several matches. Also, they won the WWE Tag Team Championship. Not to mention, they were one of the best tag teams to ever perform on WWE television.
However, they later began feuding with each other. During that, Eddie threatened to reveal a shared secret between him and Rey. He, however, mentioned that he wouldn’t share the secret if Mysterio accepted his authority over him. However, that did not happen.
With that, Eddie revealed that he was Dominik Mysterio’s real father. He said that Rey was going through some trouble starting his own family, so he left Dominik as a baby to Mysterio. Eddie then began making threats to Rey about taking custody of Dominik. However, at SummerSlam 2005, Rey defeated Guerrero for the custody of Dominik.
That marked the end of the feud between Rey and Eddie because Guerrero passed away a few months later. Eddie Guerrero passed away on November 13, 2005, at the young age of 38. The cause of his death was later reported to be acute heart failure. Thereafter, on a WWE show after his demise, Rey gave an emotional speech about his real-life friend.
Also, as a show of respect, Rey removed his mask. The same night, Rey defeated Shawn Michaels in an Interbrand match, and following the match, Mysterio cried his heart out in the memory of Eddie Guerrero. Thus, it can be understood that while Mysterio and Guerrero thoroughly entertained the fans for years, they also shared a strong bond outside the squared circle.
Though the partnership and the rivalry between Rey and Eddie did not last long, they have left behind a legacy that will be remembered years down the line. However, as of now, fans will look forward to listening to more stories about Guerrero from Mysterio. Also, they will wait eagerly to see what lies ahead for Rey in the largest wrestling promotion in the world.
