Legendary women’s college basketball head coach Pat Summitt was also caught by this disease. Summit accrued 1,098 career wins, the most in college basketball history, upon her retirement and later passed away in 2016. Just like Pat, numerous other celebrities also suffered from this disease. Floyd Mayweather Sr.’s boxing legacy
As the news of Mayweather Sr’s battle with dementia came out, people started searching heavily about him. In addition to his disease, one thing that fans have shown keen interest in is his boxing career. Born on March 15th, 1952, the veteran was able to build a legendary legacy in the industry.
He competed as a boxer from 1973 to 1990, during which he fought at welterweight during the 1970s and 1980s. Mayweather Sr. was well-known for his defensive abilities and overall knowledge of boxing strategy. Due to the immense passion he had for the sport, he was able to make a great impact.
Throughout his career as an active competitor, he fought in 35 fights. Out of them, he won 28, and what makes his record even more dominant is that 24 of the wins he had were KO wins. With the other 4 wins being through decisions, Mayweather Sr. lost just 6 fights in his career, while one was a draw.
As his boxing record was 28-6-1, it’s absolutely great. He was also the winner of the U.S. Championship Tournament in 1977 against Miguel Barreto. In 1978, his hand got injured when he was knocked out in a match by Sugar Ray Leonard. But what was even worse was that four months after this incident he was shot in the leg in a dispute. This incident virtually ended his career as a boxer.
Despite being put on the sidelines from performing in fights due to the leg wound, Floyd continued working in the boxing industry as a trainer. This decision gave him the opportunity to be involved in boxing without having to actually be in a bout, and he made the best use of this. Even in this new role, he was able to achieve great success. He trained famous names such as top light heavyweight Chad Dawson.
Floyd also trained women’s champion Laila Ali, and former two-division champion Joan Guzmán. Additionally, he also remained the trainer for Oscar De La Hoya’s trainer from 2001 through 2006. But his training career faced a major disruption when he faced a five-and-a-half-year prison sentence on a drug-dealing conviction, which took him into the negative limelight. Alongside this, Mayweather Sr.’s relationship with his own son also remained a major controversy for several years.
The extent of heat between them was so high that the 71-year-old was removed as the trainer for Mayweather Jr. Despite the highly-discussed public fallouts they had in the past, the father-son duo eventually came to terms in 2013. It was for the first time in 13 years that Floyd Sr. was announced to be returning as the trainer of his son for the fight against Robert Guerrero.
Since then, the two have been supporting each other through thick and thin, and the young Mayweather boxing star’s recent post shows how deeply he loves his father. With the news of Floyd Mayweather Sr.’s suffering, his son has revealed what the boxing legend is going through. In fact, the video clip he shared also shows the affection his father has for his great-grandson, as he was seen helping him wear clothes in it.
The boxing world has been showing great support to the 71-year-old after the recent announcement. But it remains to be seen if Mayweather Jr. shares more insights about his father’s disease in the future. Moreover, everyone must be praying for the well-being of the boxing legend from the Mayweather clan.
