Ahead of their highly anticipated fight, Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney came face to face for the first time. In a fight that has been touted for what seems like ages, we will finally witness it on the main stage. With that said, we also know why the fight was put off for so long.
Recently, Garcia and Haney came face to face for the first time since the announcement of their fight. In an interview with Stephen A. Smith and Shannon Sharpe, the two boxers previewed their upcoming fight. One of the talking points that emerged was ‘KingRy’ revealing why Floyd Mayweather advised him against taking the fight against Haney.
As Ryan explains, “Basically they’re trying to say he (Devin) is not a draw. You know, he ain’t sh*t, basically is what they’re saying right? I mean, I’m not trying to talk that much sh*t, I have already”. Surprisingly, this particular segment was heavily censored for many viewers, likely due to expectations of profanity usage. However, that wasn’t the case, and an uncensored version was released on ESPN shortly afterward.
Ryan Garcia explains his relationship with Floyd Mayweather
With that said Ryan Garcia clarified that he did not feel Devin Haney was not a big draw. In fact, Garcia previously revealed that he stands to make more money by fighting Haney than he did when he fought Gervonta Davis. Thus, his intentions to fight Haney were purely determined by his fans. As the fighter also revealed, he is close with Floyd Mayweather, who advised him against fighting Haney.
According to Garcia, Mayweather advised him to take on the WBA super lightweight title holder Rolly Romero first before going after Devin. However, Ryan revealed that he had already given the people his word and intended to keep it. Further, the former interim WBC lightweight title holder also revealed that his fight with Romero fell through after the fighter priced himself out. Notably, Mayweather was leading the negotiations.
Recently, Ryan also delved into his relationship with Floyd stating, “We’re good, we’re cool, I think he’s a little mad at me for saying some things. He didn’t tell me to keep things as a secret so…”. As it turns out, Mayweather disclosed implicating footage about Haney, that Garcia spoke about publicly. With relations between Floyd, Devin, and his father Bill Haney, already fractured, it further added to the drama.
Did Devin Haney get knocked out by Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis?
For those unaware, Ryan Garcia is speaking about disclosing the fact that Floyd Mayweather showed him footage of Gervonta Davis brutally knocking out Devin Haney. Naturally, there has been a lot of backlash since the information went public, as sparring footage or what happens during it is considered to be a closely kept secret between the fighters. However, with Ryan disclosing it to the public, it led to a lot of backlash.
For the most part, it was no secret that ‘The Dream’ had also sparred with Mayweather in the past. As a result, it was understood that there was a certain amount of respect between the two. However, news of Davis knocking out Haney in sparring has caused Bill Haney to come out and trash Floyd. According to Devin’s father, Floyd decided to retire from boxing after sparring with his son.
In the meantime, there have also been conflicting stories regarding the Davis-Haney spar. According to Floyd Mayweather Sr, Haney was the one that dominated Davis throughout. Naturally, the spar in question could be a different one and at a different time. According to Garcia’s testimony, Devin was around 19 years old when he got knocked out by Gervonta. All things considered, it’s exciting times ahead for boxing fans.
