After speculations suggesting that Ryan Garcia is turning to Mayweather Promotions, Garcia seems set to face Rolando Romero in the coming months. Several developments have taken place in Garcia’s life recently.
He was seen jogging with Floyd Mayweather in the early morning hours a few days ago. Oscar De La Hoya, Garcia’s promoter and Mayweather’s rival, commented about it later. Moreover, Garcia announced the birth of his child as well however, soon after he announced that he was separating from his partner.
Amidst the chaos in his life, the 25-year-old wants to grace the boxing ring against Mayweather Promotion’s Romero. Mayweather uploaded a poster of the fight recently and gave his opinion on it. He wrote, “@kingryan [Ryan Garcia] Vs. @rolliesss [Rolando Romero] One the most anticipated fights this year. I guarantee this will be action packed. This one right here is bombs away!”

Lightweight fighter Garcia, who is a Golden Boy Promotions fighter, was in talks to face Devin Haney. According to Garcia’s promoter Oscar, the American had asked to set up a fight against Haney. However, Garcia seems to have pulled out of those negotiations. He is working toward confirming a fight against Romero. Garcia claimed that a fight against Haney would still be there after Romero and it would be bigger.
Haney boasts an undefeated 31-0 record and he is the reigning WBC super lightweight champion. On the other hand, Garcia is a former WBC interim lightweight champion with a 24-1 record. Romero is the WBA super lightweight champion with a record of 14-1. He won the title in May 2023 by defeating Ismael Barroso. Reports suggest that the title will be on the line for his bout against Garcia.
Oscar De La Hoya responds to Ryan Garcia’s change of heart after a run with Floyd Mayweather
In April 2023, Garcia faced the defeat of his career. He lost to Gervonta Davis via KO in the seventh round. Mayweather celebrated with Davis in the ring and taunted his long-time rival Oscar, Garcia’s promoter. Since then, Oscar and Garcia’s relationship has been tainted publicly.
Garcia fought again in December against Oscar Duarte and won the bout via KO in the eighth round. A fight against Haney seemed to be in the works for Garcia until his run with Mayweather.

Oscar posted on Instagram: “Pre-run with Floyd = Ryan wants Haney. Post-run with Floyd = Ryan wants Rolly.
“Golden Boy has worked with Ryan Garcia since he turned pro, and together have made him the biggest draw in boxing. We will make his fight with Rolly into a huge event, as we always do. Floyd, if you want to give Ryan the secret to defence in the ring, that’s great. Other than that, if you are still a promoter like it says here, f*** off.”
If Garcia vs. Romero is confirmed and ‘The Flash’ can pull off a victory, Haney vs. Garcia could be a fight to unify the WBA and WBC super lightweight titles. In essence, it would prove Garcia’s claims of a bigger fight in the future with Haney true.
