Borisa Simanic recently faced a scary injury that proves how dangerous the sport of basketball can be. Over the years, basketball players have put their safety at risk to perform at a high level to entertain fans. As fans, most of us have witnessed some of the worst things happen to our favorite stars. Sometimes, players are susceptible to threatening injuries even through ordinary and legal basketball plays.
Serbia has been playing exceptionally well during the 2023 FIBA World Cup. The squad is led by none other than Bogdan Bogdanovic along with a bunch of key Serbian stars such as Nikola Milutinov, Ognjen Dobrić, and rising star Nikola Jovic. Serbia recently won against the Dominican Republic and is set to face Lithuania in the quarter-finals. They are one of the higher-ranked teams that may make it into the tournament this year.
Unfortunately, they lost a valuable player on the bench, Borisa Simanic. Against South Sudan on August 30, 2023, Simanic was doing his best on the court by being a defensive piece. During one particular play, he was hit in the lower abdomen. He was just another ordinary play and the physical contact was not a foul. But to everyone’s surprise, Simanic was rushed to the hospital where he had one of his kidneys removed.
Borisa Simanic will most likely make a return to basketball in the future
Serbia’s head coach expressed his thoughts on the incident claiming that the entire squad was shocked. Especially, since it happened during an ordinary play that frequently takes place. Svetislav Pesic said, “It was a huge shock for all of us, we could not have expected that such a blow could be not only painful but tragic. It’s good that it’s over. The team was together all night, they were searching for extra blood because it was not possible to collect enough since Borisa was bleeding a lot. It ended well.”
