The Detroit Pistons have made quite some moves in this offseason so far. Detroit now has a new head coach, who is the highest-paid head coach in the league. And now, the team is looking to be active in trade talks and is on the lookout for free agents. The Pistons stood last in the Eastern Conference in the previous regular season.
Detroit’s primary scorer and key player, Cade Cunningham sat out most of the season due to injury. Regardless, the franchise has already made some big moves so far. There are quite some free agents that the Pistons should look out for. Those do include every position, though Detroit would keep an eye out for forwards. They already have yet another lottery pick on their roster, Ausar Thompson who they recently drafted. Whereas when we look at the market, the Pistons might have their priority set on this forward.
The Detroit Pistons look to offer Cam Johnson a 4-year contract
There are quite some players in the league with signature 4-year $100 million contracts. These players are reliable assets and primary scorers of the team. Detroit has the option to sign the restricted free agent, Cameron Johnson. Johnson was traded by the Suns during the trade deadline along with other players, as Durant arrived in Phoenix. Playing for the Nets, Cam averaged 16.6 points and 4.8 rebounds, in the 25 games he played.
Johnson is a pretty consistent shooter as well, shooting 39.3% from outside and efficiently making 44% of his shots. Other than that, Cam is a solid defender, making him the perfect piece for the huge contract that the Pistons will be willing to offer. The Nets are willing to offer a 4-year $84 million deal, though considering Detroit’s numbers, Brooklyn will look to retain their 6’8 forward.
Regardless, Johnson, 27, would be a great addition to the young roster consisting mostly of lottery picks. In other options, the Pistons have the name Harrison Barnes on the table. Th 31-year-old is a decent shooter and a reliable defender. Though signing Johnson would be a better choice, looking at the age gap between the two.
Barnes has been averaging almost the same numbers as Cam, but the Pistons would only look to sign him for a year or two. Johnson will definitely be a great future asset who might develop into the team’s primary scorer and a leader down the line. It will be interesting to see which player the Pistons look to sign this offseason.
