Gordon Ryan is currently the most popular athlete in the world of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. At just 27 years of age, Ryan has amassed incredible achievements. He is a multi-time ADCC, No-Gi world champion, and Eddie Bravo Invitational champion.
Ryan has an incredibly ripped physique and undoubtedly the BJJ icon spends the majority of his time training. However, Ryan’s astounding career is not spotless and many have accused ‘The King’ to have used steroids. Looking at his incredible physique has led many to believe that Ryan is on some kind of PEDs.
Moreover, Ryan was accused of using steroids by his former Renzo Gracie teammate Matthew Kaplan back in 2018. Kaplan posted on his social media claiming that everyone knew Ryan was on steroids and that just looking at his drastic weight cut can be another evidence of his PEDs use.
Ryan once gained 50 pounds in three months but was immediately hospitalized. Apart from Kaplan, Derek from More Plates More Dates also explained Ryan’s steroid accusations in great detail. Derek has been calling out some big names for their steroid abuse.

Moreover, Ryan suffers frequently from stomach issues and he briefly retired in 2021 due to his gastroparesis issues. According to many, the stomach issues are a clear indication of Ryan’s heavy steroid use.
When did Gordon Ryan start practicing BJJ?
Gordon Ryan started training in grappling when he was 15 years old. He first used to train under Miguel Benitez before switching to John Danaher, Tom DeBlass, and Garry Tonon. Ryan is a 1st-degree black belt in BJJ under Garry Tonon and Danaher.
In a very short period, Ryan has achieved almost everything. He was a brown belt for 6-months and after competing in several grappling tournaments, he was awarded the black belt by Tonon in 2016. The ceremony was also attended by deBlass, Danaher, and Ricardo Almeida, who are some of the biggest names in the world of grappling.
Ryan is currently the most popular icon in the grappling world and he represents the Danaher Death Squad, which is led by BJJ legend John Danaher. Ryan is only 27 now; however, some might say he looks much older than his natural age.
This was also pointed out by many fans and they attributed this to Ryan’s steroid use. Check out some of the tweets below:

Ryan most recently fought Nicky Rod at the UFC Fight Pass Invitational 3 and is expected to achieve even more success and fame under the UFC umbrella, even more, if he decides to compete in mixed martial arts. ‘The King’ is considered the greatest of all time in BJJ but these accusations can seriously tarnish Ryan’s legacy.
