WWE legend John Cena returned to television on SmackDown’s September 1 episode and received a thunderous pop from the audience. His return on Friday’s show was his first appearance since MITB 2023, but it wasn’t just one-off, as the 16-time World Champion is set to appear regularly on TV over the next two months.
During his promo on the blue brand, The Cenation Leader left the crowd elated by announcing that he’ll be hosting WWE Payback. As Cena returned to Payback on Saturday, his actions at the premium live event left fans asking for a special feature in WWE 2K24 that hasn’t been seen in over a decade.
As John made his return to Payback on Saturday, he surprised fans by revealing that he’ll be working as the “Special Guest Referee” for the match between The Miz and LA Knight. His decision to perform the duties of the referee left fans asking the Stamford-based promotion to bring back this feature in the upcoming 2K24 game.

It must be noted that the guest referee option was available in WWE video games until 2013, when THQ was the publisher. But after THQ’s Chapter 11, the rights were sold to 2K Sports for the continuation of the games. Ever since the new publisher came onboard, the feature hasn’t been available.
Therefore, John Cena serving as the special guest referee at Payback gave a sort of nostalgia to WWE’s gaming fans, and they’ve been suggesting the Triple H-led promotion bring back this feature. It remains to be seen whether the company or the publishing agency takes note of their demands or not!
When is WWE 2K24 going to be released?
WWE’s 2K24 having the special guest referee feature is obviously something fans want, but there is no denial that the past editions of the game were also cool. Next year’s game is going to be the twenty-fourth edition in the game’s history, and eleventh edition under 2K Sports.
For the creation and publication of WWE 2K24, 2K Sports has taken Visual Concepts on board, and their association is probably going to do wonders for the fans. The game is set to be released on March 18, 2024, with a price of $59.99 for its standard edition. (Via: Digital Phablet)
While the Triple-H led promotion’s 2023 edition of the game was highly successful, WWE 2K24 is going to have some major changes from last year’s video game. It will have several new match types, such as I Quit, Buried Alive, Slobber Knocker, and 40-man Royal Rumble matches.
In addition to all these matches, the game is also going to fulfill fans’ recent wish, as it will have the “Special Referee” match. As the upcoming edition of 2K24 is going to include some classic WWE matches, it seems that it’ll be among the best ever video games in the Triple H-led promotion’s gaming history.
