Just when fans thought Fortnite was on a surprising spree by dropping some of the most iconic collaborations one after the other, Epic Games has pulled out another one. This time it’s a brand new arcade racing game in Fortnite.
Just a couple of days back Fortnite began its biggest expansion campaign by dropping LEGO Fortnite. The brand-new game within Fortnite comes with over 1,200 new skins. It is a full survival crafting game that is free for all players.
Next came the announcement of Fortnite Festival, another free-to-play music video game. Fortnite Festival looks at reviving the now-dead rhythm game genre by collaborating with multiple well-known and best-selling music artists across the globe, starting with Canadian singer, songwriter, and record producer The Weeknd in Season 1.
To add to the list, now comes Fortnite Rocket Racing. It is an arcade racing game developed by Psyonix, the developers of Rocket League, a vehicular soccer video game. Rocket Racing went live in the game on December 8, 2023.
What is Fortnite Rocket Racing?
Fortnite Rocket Racing is an arcade racing game that offers an intriguing and fast-paced driving experience. It is best experienced when there are up to 12 players on the track at the same time. The game includes as many as 26 tracks available at launch. These tracks are spread across three difficulties. The game will feature ranks to climb, challenges to complete as well as XP which combines into Fortnite’s overall battle pass.
Another interesting feature of Rocket Racing is the ability to unlock customization options for one’s vehicles. Moreover, it allows players to enjoy cross-game ownership of car parts with Rocket League along with purchasing more of them from Fortnite’s Item Shop. Currently, this seems to be the only monetization option Epic Games is looking at from Rocket Racing.
Rocket Racing will follow the same season format as the base Fortnite game. Currently, the new racing game is running in Season Zero. The first proper season of Fortnite Rocket Racing is expected to launch early next year. Similarly, in 2024, the devs plan to add new modes such as Time Trials as well as new cosmetic options for cars to unlock. In late 2024, the game mode will also allow for the construction of individual tracks via an editor.
Currently, Rocket Racing, just like Lego Fortnite, introduces some cosmetics that players already own in Rocket League as well as the base version of Fortnite. Epic Games confirmed the ability to carry over models like the Octane, Cyclone, Jäger 619, and Lamborghini Huracán STO from Rocket League to Rocket Racing.
Is Rocket Racing inspired by Mario Kart?
Fortnite Rocket Racing is developed by Rocket League developer Psyonix. Fans and experts believe that Rocket Racing is an arcade racer that combines aspects of Mario Kart and Burnout, harmonized with some of Rocket League’s mechanics.
Players can roar around tracks, slipstream past or collide with rivals to knock them out, aim for boost pads, dodge obstacles, and stash boost by drifting. Players also get a limited ability to jump by sending their vehicle flying vertically upwards to higher parts of the track or across barriers, waterfalls, and secret shortcuts.
Additionally, just like other Fortnite games, the XP earned in Rocket Racing will add to the Fortnite battle pass. This will ensure that irrespective of the Fortnite game that players play, they will be able to unlock stuff across multiple games.
With these varied collaborations, Epic Games is trying to establish Fortnite as more than just a battle royale game. It is creating its own metaverse. It is now a sandbox survival game with LEGO Fortnite, a musical game with Fortnite Festival, and now an arcade racing with Rocket Racing.
