NBA 2K24 was released on September 08, 2023. The game is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, as well as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. It is the latest work by Visual Concepts and 2K Sports and it is a product of the 25th Anniversary celebrations of the video-game series.
The game incorporates real teams and players, both renowned and current. You can even manage actual teams in the game or create your own squad out of your favorite NBA players. The game introduced several features that piqued the interest of the players, including the NBA League Pass and the possibility to reproduce some of Kobe Bryant’s most recognized achievements.
However, the game’s very unfavorable reviews on Steam show that PC gamers don’t really like it. The response to the game has not been particularly positive. The title in question had very negative reviews as of the time these words are being penned, and the trade press has not yet given it a rating.
Player criticisms center on the lack of innovation compared to Visual Concepts’ release from the previous year and the content’s inability to justify the expensive price. Regarding the latter, the Kobe Bryant Edition, the least expensive edition of the game, is available on Steam for just $69.99, while the 25th Anniversary Edition, the most expensive, costs more than $120.
Fans express their criticism after the NBA 2K24 launch on Steam
By removing the narrative-driven model from MyCareer, NBA 2K24 has let fans down, which has resulted in unfavorable reviews and criticisms about the game’s lack of drama and difficult choices. The elimination of the plot, which is perceived as a more severe issue than not having access to next-gen visuals, has PC players particularly furious.
NBA 2K24, the current-gen edition, forgoes the MyCareer-based narrative in favor of the sandbox environment of The Neighborhood, much to the astonishment of many NBA 2K gamers. There are still a few cutscenes here and there. The absence of the story from MyCareer in current-gen versions, which has now emerged as a new issue for PC gamers of NBA 2K24, was never explicitly mentioned by 2K and Visual Concepts.
One of the users on Steam said, “Game is boringggg! Same old style and very identical gameplay to previous games. MyCareer is boring with no story. Requested a refund for my 25th Anniversary Edition“. The fans are upset that there is no update as such in the gameplay.
Another user said, “No Story for MyCareer? 2K23 Next Gen builder transferred to 2K24 Old Gen. Limitless Takeoff is still in the game. BRUH, Can’t even refund my pre-order”
The majority of reviews focus on MyCareer’s lack of narrative and the game’s archaic aesthetics, so this is undoubtedly not a good beginning for the game, however, it also doesn’t seem like a problem that could be addressed in the future.
