The venue for Devin Haney vs Ryan Garcia has been a topic for debate for some time now. The boxing stalwarts will meet inside the Barclays Center on April 20 in New York.
However, many fans, including Garcia, felt that a fight of such magnitude should have occurred in Las Vegas. But according to Eddie Hearn, nothing is more bigger in the sport of boxing than Canelo Alvarez stepping inside the boxing ring, and rightfully so.
Eddie Alvarez gives his two cents on the controversy surrounding Haney vs Garcia fight venue
Canelo will make his boxing return in Las Vegas less than two weeks later after Haney vs Garcia. According to recent reports, his next opponent could be fellow Mexican Jaime Munguia on May 4, later this year.
Defending the decision not to hold the fight in Las Vegas but in New York to avoid clashing with Canelo Alvarez’s return, here’s what Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn had to say.
Eddie Hearn has confirmed he is now in talks to make Canelo Alvarez vs Jaime Munguia next: “It would be a dream to bring him back to Matchroom and DAZN… I would like to work with him for the rest of his career.” [@MMAFighting]

“Does April 20th become little bit of a tough sell? Nothing is ever gonna outsell Canelo; nothing is ever gonna overshadow Canelo. But two mega fights so close together is never ideal. But again that’s got to be formally announced anyway. I understand Ryan’s from LA, and there’s a lot of money to be generated in Las Vegas, but I really like the fight in New York. I think it’s a good fight for New York.” Hearn said to Ariel Helwani of The MMA Hour.
The Matchroom Boxing promoter also revealed that he will be helping Devin Haney promote his fight against Garcia, having previously worked with the former undisputed lightweight champion. However, it’s interesting to note that Hearn will have zero financial implications from the fight.
“In association with Matchrooom Boxing,” Hearn said about the super-fight co-promoted by Devin Haney Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions.
