Darren Kenneth Matthews, aka William Regal, has been a very prominent name in the professional wrestling industry. Holding an integral place in the top pro wrestling promotions such as WWE and AEW, Regal has often been the highlight of the division.
William Regal became an instant sensation after he joined All Elite Wrestling in 2022. He went ahead to manage his students, Jon Moxley and Bryan Danielson. He stayed with the company for almost nine months before taking his leave. Soon after, he went ahead to join WWE to be with his son.
Tony Khan stated that William Regal didn’t want to renew his contract with AEW because he wants to return to WWE and help coach his son Charlie Dempsey.

Tony Khan broke the news of William Regal’s departure to the audience. Upon his return, the 55-year-old started contributing to the promotion behind the screen. In January 2023, William Regal started working as the Vice President of Global Talent Development at WWE. While his AEW exit had been quite smooth, fans wonder what led to his AEW exit.
William Regal explains his AEW departure
William Regal took to X and explained his AEW exit. He revealed that he and Tony Khan talked about his departure while Tony’s mother was ill. Amidst those tough times, the AEW President gave brief answers. When Regal got to know about the same, he wrapped up the conversation.
“We eventually talked about me leaving 2 weeks later in Jacksonville. Time and time spent was the reasons for my leaving, no agenda for anything else. I have lived through some serious times in 2018/19 and realize time is all I have…,” wrote Regal on X.
The former AEW manager also went ahead to recall his time in the Tony Khan-led promotion that ended on a good note. He claimed that he had a great time at the promotion and was grateful for the time he had spent with his friends and crew. His long tweets came in response to people speculating on the bad terms on which he had probably parted ways with AEW.
“I just want to make that public so people stop misinterpreting it. It’s sad that people in our job can’t realize that you can be a decent human being without having an agenda or taking advantage,” he added, justifying his tweets. Currently, he is happily serving in WWE and staying in touch with his son, Charlie Dempsey.
