What happened at the Montreal Screwjob involving Bret Hart and Vince McMahon?
The Montreal Screwjob is a historic WWE segment that took place on November 9, 1997, in Montreal. The incident marks the shrewdness and creativity of the WWE stars to alter the course of the match with utter perfection. Back then, Bret Hart had been the WWF Champion. Despite working for the company for many years, he had decided to quit WWF and join WCW.
In order to do so, he had to either lose his title or relinquish it. But Hart was not the man to let go of the title this easily. Then, Vince McMahon and Shawn Michaels made up a plan and dragged the referee, Earl Hebner, to their side. At Survivor Series 1997, Shawn Michaels faced Bret Hart for his title.
As per the original plan, the match had to end in a disqualification, with Bret retaining his title. But during the match, Michaels held Bret in a sharpshooter and before Bret could submit, Earl called for the bell declaring Michaels as the new champion. The incident received responses from everyone in the WWE Universe, making it one of the most iconic incidents inside the WWE ring.
