Height is a factor that undoubtedly influences the odds of finding success in the NBA. Although there have been several players in league history that weren’t considered very tall, they still managed to play at a high level and establish their respective legacies in the NBA. A few examples could be players like Stephen Curry, Allen Iverson, and Kyrie Irving.
While all of them are listed under 6’3 and are considered short by NBA standards, they have proven themselves as certified NBA stars. However, there is no denying that they are rare exceptions as the world of basketball is dominated by the larger players.
Fans should certainly want to know who the tallest players in the NBA are at the moment. Especially with the recent additions of multiple rookies in the league. With that being said, let us take a closer look and find out more.
Is Victor Wembanyama the tallest player in the NBA?
This NBA Draft and offseason has been filled with excitement primarily due to the Spurs acquiring Victor Wembanyama. Wemby was already playing professional basketball in France before being drafted and has already been heralded as a generational talent and certified star.
In theory, Wembanyama has what it takes to become an NBA great. Despite being a center, Wemby has shown impressive ball control, shooting, and shot-blocking abilities. Before fans heard of Wembanyama, Boban Marjanovic was the tallest player in the league listed at 7’4.
Although Wembanyama was initially listed as 7’2, recent measurements reveal that he is 7’4. That puts him and Boban in a tie as the tallest player in the league. Moreover, Victor is only 19 years old at the moment. He could certainly grow a few more inches over the next few years.
The only other player in that height range would be Kristaps Porzinigs. He is listed at 6’3 and was initially considered a “unicorn” type of player when joining the league. The expectations that fans had of Porzinigis are near nothing when compared to what the NBA world is expecting from Victor Wembanyama.
While there is still criticism regarding his frame and conditioning, there is no denying that his incredible height and wingspan will allow Wemby to become a very good shot blocker. Since he is much lighter than Boban or Krisatps, that translates to his athleticism and jumping ability positively. We look forward to seeing how he handles the upcoming NBA season and if he actually grows even taller.
