Jorge Masvidal is a former UFC welterweight fighter. He retired from UFC after his last fight against Gilbert Burns at UFC 287 which he lost by a unanimous decision.
Before this fight, Jorge Masvidal locked horns with Colby Covington at UFC 272. The fight became very popular among fans as Masvidal and Covington were friends and roommates but things turned bitter between them and a strong rivalry developed.
Colby Covington won the welterweight bout against Masvidal by a unanimous decision. After a few days of the fight, on March 24, Masvidal was arrested by the Miami Beach Police on the charges of aggravated battery and criminal mischief. According to the official reports, Masvidal was involved in an altercation with Colby Covington outside a restaurant in Miami Beach.
The reports say that Masvidal attacked his former friend and damaged his watch, injured his wrist and also caused a fractured tooth. Following the arrest, Masvidal was hit with a restraining order which requires him to stay at least 25 feet away from Colby Covington, 500 feet away from the fighter’s residence, and stops him from contacting Colby in any way.
As of now, no official decision has been given by the Miami Court. The trial date has now been postponed to Nov. 6. If Jorge Masvidal is found guilty on the charges mentioned above, he can face prison for 15 years and/or fine up to $10,000 with additional penalties. The retired fighter has maintained his innocence on this matter from the beginning.
Jorge Masvidal claims he “wasn’t even there” when Colby Covington got assaulted
Months after the whole drama, Jorge Masvidal appeared on popular YouTuber turned boxer Jake Paul’s podcast, ‘BS w/ Jake Paul’. When Paul asked the former UFC fighter about the whole controversy, Masvidal straight up denied all the allegations against him.
“There – that’s allegedly this – allegedly that… because I wasn’t even there”- said Masvidal.
According to the claims made by Colby Covington, Masvidal allegedly attacked him outside a restaurant called ‘Papi Steak’. So, Paul asked the fighter if he was now banned from the restaurant after the incident. Masvidal replied that he has good relations with the restaurant owner and he further added that their business has grown tremendously after the incident.
“Man! Since that freakin’ little rumor that, allegedly, you were there, reservations went through the roof.’ Like, 530%, he said. And I was like, ‘I would love to take these nice vibes you’re giving me, but that was “allegedly,” we both know.’ And he was like, ‘I know, man. But still,” said Jorge Masvidal on Jake Paul’s podcast.
Jake Paul further enquired if there was any chance that the two rivals can settle their differences. His guest Masvidal clarified that there was no possibility of him and Covington sharing a common ground. What are your thoughts on the matter? Let us know in the comments down below.
